Alright, I know I may have had an advantage over other kids..my dad owned a gas station, so I do not remember ever NOT knowing how to check tire pressure and put air into tires.

This evening, I had to run to the drugstore to pick up a prescription for Rick.  He reminded me as I was leaving that two of the tires on my car were low, and I should go to the station across from the pharmacy to put air in.  It is one of the few stations here that actually offer free air.

Anyway, I ended up behing some girl, maybe in her young 20's who seemed totally lost by what she needed to do.  She was looking totally confuddled while some guy was trying to show her how to check the pressure, and fill the tires.  All four of them.  She seemed just as confused at the end as when she starte.

Anyway, about 10 minutes later when I got to the pump, it took me just a couple minutes to do what I needed to do and be on my way.

Isn't that the pitts, having to pay for air these days!!! 3 years ago, I rented a car to go on a business trip. And when filling up the gas tank 200 miles later at the gas station, I noticed the RF Tire was low. So I went to add air, & low & behold, there was a "50" cents money meter on the air pump! So it cost me "50" cents to fill up the tire on a "rented car"! Ticked me off, (It was the principle of the thing) but I added that "50" cents expense on my company expense report & was reimbursed. And it's good for "anyone" driving a car to know at least the "basics" about keeping it going safely! Good for you!

By the time I got my learner's permit, I could pump gas, check all the fluid levels, and knew how and where to replace most of them.  The only one I did not add or change was the coolant...my dog tended to always be by my side, and my dad did not want her getting into it if it spilled.

Boy, my dad taught me how to check and change the fluids too Marie.  I had to learn how to pump gas (although most stations did this for you) AND know how to change a flat!  His thinking was, if you're going to take a vehicle you better know how to take care of it when you're out and about.  I think all kids should have to know these things before they can get a license!  It teaches a little responsibility.

Actually, she looked a bit Goth to me.  Jet black hair, heavy black around eyes, and dark lipstick.  Either that, or she forgot Halloween was LAST week.

Tire pressure monitors are coming with more new cars these days, so at least drivers will get a warning light if their tire pressures are below 30 psi. Whether they respond properly to the warning is another issue.

My 97 Gran Prix had tire pressure monitors. And a dashboard warning light went on whenever the air pressure in any one of the tires varied by more then "8' lbs from the other tires. Pretty cool thing. As when the car was brand new like maybe only 4 months old, the light went on & the first thing I thought was that it was a malfunction as the car was new, & it would go off. But the light stayed on, so after a little while I finally checked the pressure on all the tires. And sure enough 3 tires had 32lbs, & the right side rear had only 20 lbs. Well took it off & low & behold, there was a big ol nail staring up at me. So had it fixed & all was good in the world!  :D

A few weeks ago Rick got me a set of these valve stem caps with a pressure gauge built in (I have placed pictures below).  When your order them, you order them by the psi for your car.  So, mine has 36's .  What happens is, when they are full pressure, it shows full green.  When they get more than something like 6 pounds psi off, the green bar drops and you see a red bar.   Pretty accurate so far.

In Iowa (young people) cannot get a license without taking Drivers Ed.  (which is a whole other topic  - :verymad::rant::cash::cash::cash::cash::cash:)...but they do spend one day learning these things.  Which I thought was great!

I had to go to a neighboring small town for work a couple months ago (they have 4 gas stations, i drove by each one and only one offered free air...but it took 20 minutes to add 10 lbs of pressure...my hand ached so bad when i was done.    I wished I would have paid. ::chuckle::

Luckily there's a station in the town i normally work in that offers free (good) air.  Especially with this wonderful 10 miles of gravel detour I've had to take the past month.  I had 3 flat tires the first 2 weeks.  We finally broke down and bought some good new tires though and haven't had one since. ::wheww::::thumbs::

Our Hess stations all offer free air.  A couple of the Mobils here, with service bays have free air also, and I will admit to using them sometimes because I can get someone to fill the tires for me, if I am feeling particularly lazy.  For some reason, I often have trouble with the Mobil ones..end up letting air OUT.  So if I am doing it myself I go to Hess.
