I wonder how much energy it takes to compress the air it runs off of. Does it take more energy to compress the air it converts back to electricity?

The MSNBC article states that as a concern. Environmentalists are also wary about the Air Car's claimed benefits. Converting energy from electricity to compressed air is inefficient, according to Karsten Krause of the European Federation for Transport and Environment, a green lobby group based in Brussels.
By consuming much more energy from the power plant than it delivers on the road, Krause said, it could even do as much environmental damage as some gasoline cars.
"You may not have any pollution from the car itself," he said, "but you're just transferring the environmental burden to another place."
I've always wondered about the feasibility of a "wind turbine" collecting the energy from the speed and movement of a vehicle into a battery. I don't think a wind turbine could provide the entirety of the energy, but why not employ them to provide a portion of it?

I imagine the extra drag created from such a wind turbine technology would more than offset any energy it would collect. It could be used as an air break, but deploying it on a moving vehicle may be problematic and it wouldn't slow a vehicle very much. There don't seem to be any easy answers, so it's understandable so many are skeptical.

Hmmmm...I've been reading a little on the subject - it's seems to be a hot topic - anyways I read through the comments at this page
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2006/03/wind_powered_electric_car.html
and the one comment mentions spoilers and how they help a car go faster. This comment made me think - "huh - well maybe a windmill design can't work, but what about a paddle wheel design like for riverboats?"
Anyway, I think discussion and experimentation about all alternative forms of energy are great. We'll never find out if something would work or not if no one ever tries it.
Imho we need to get back to the greatest and oldest form of alternative energy there is - human powered vehicles.
Just think how healthy and svelte we would all be if we had to walk or cycle nearly everywhere we wanted to go.
Yeah, yeah - society would have to change and people would still need transport for distance, but trains are and option that's severely under-utilized in the United States. It still would be a good thing - methinks - all-around.
