On my older cars, the defroster was a fan/heater connected to airducts which could direct the air either up to the windshield or down to the dashboard with. My newer vehicles require the compressor to operate inorder for the defroster to work. Why?

I hate running the compressor as it draws power away from the engine and I can feel the  $$$'s leaving my wallet. What was wrong with the old way?

the compressor runs because it helps to dry out the air and therefore defrosts (removes the moisture) from the windows more efficiently.

They run the A/C compressor when you have it in the defrost position, so that the compressor does not seize up during the winter months.

:D

Makes sense. It does defrost pretty quick.
