Those were the days my friends, can we go back just for a few moments.

If only I hadn't traded my 1964 Galaxy 500XL Ford red convertible...!

Harley Earl and the 1938 Buick. This picture was taken 70 years ago.

1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt

1951 Buick LeSabre. What would you give for this car now?

51 Chrysler K310

1953 Buick Wildcat

1954 Buick Wildcat II

1954 Dodge FireArrow

1958 Lincoln Premiere

1955 Nash Rambler Cross Country Wagon

1956 Ford Sunliner

1959 Chevrolet Brookwood Stationwagon

1951 Hudson Hornet

1959 Plymouth Fury

1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser

1951 Studebaker Champion

1971 Buick Rivera Boattail

1958 Edsel Convertible

Back in the days when cars had style, and even with so many makes & models, all changing every year, they made a profit.

And, not only that but one could sit on the porch and name the cars as they drove by . . .
unlike today . . . when they all look the same ....

YEP --- SEVEN DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS - AMERICAN AND IMPORTS...! ALL LOOKING THE SAME....YUK !!

Great thread Shimmy!  Nice change from politics!  I do remember the 1971 Buick Rivera Battler, and the 1956 Ford Sunliner .  The names of some of the others sound familiar.....but they all have something about them that I sure don't recognize.

Wow, what I wouldn't give for Harley Earl's Buick!!! Magnificent!

I've had several cars similar to those in the pix! Studerbaker, Merc crusier, Ford Sunliner, 60 Lincoln prem rag top, 53 wildcat.

And then when I was young & daring, I sometime had a car for only 4 or 5 weeks, & then I would trade it for something else. I had a 60 Bonneville, 63 Stringray rag top, 71 XKE rag top, 58 Volvo, 61 Renault Carivelle rag top, 58 Cutless rag top, 59 Chrisler Imperial,  55 & 56 belair's, 58 ford police interceptor, 61 Caddy ragtop, 59 Eldorado, 63 chevy, 74 Celica, 56 Buick Roadmaster, Corvair rag top, 62 Tornado, 82 Riveria, 74 Montecarlo, 56 & 59 Beatles, 92 Lesabre, 97 Taurus, plus many that don't readily come to mind, but in total I had 47"!  (Plus my current Car, makes it 48!)

1948 Tucker Torpedo

My late grandfather reportedly had the dealership rights for the Tucker in New Mexico, and took delivery of the only one they sent him before the feds, et. al., shut 'em all down.

Awesome post, Shimmy!!! I, too, remember being able to identify most cars on the road "way back when". It was a fun time.

True, it's getting much harder to identify today's cars. But if you're quick with the grills and tail lights, you might be on to something...LOL.

Cars, did you say 74 Monte?! One of my favorite car designs; I just bought another second generation Monte, a 74 with factory 454 and electric sunroof, swivel buckets, etc, in original condition. My first Monte, a 73 with sunroof and swivels, was stolen 14 years ago.

Shimmy, those were the days. Those days lasted for perhaps 80 years, but I'm afraid the last 20 have seen a change and I'm not so proud of where we are now. I think some of it has to be because of manufacturers' approach to doing business, ie designed obsolescence, and since they build cars to throw away, how can they be proud of their work, and put effort into their design and quality? I'm afraid it's all over for the great era of the American automobile.

I've never seen that 51 Buick LeSabre before. What a bold design, sort of like a locomotive in front! I've always liked the boattail Rivieras too.

No, it looks more like this:

Nice Chevelle, of course!! When are you going to vacuum that carpet... ;)

Nice Monte! Always fun! The leaves fly in there hoping for a ride every year. I am hoping to replace all the brake lines with a teflon coated line this winta. On the lift I also noticed the old spring wrapped lines in the rear quarter. Those will get ripped out also. Gotta love a project car. I would love to trade up to a 68- 69 Chevelle.::inlove:: or a 70 Cuda. There is a guy up the road that has 6-7 different Chevelles. He drives me nuts!

The project is always easier when you start with such a quality piece as yours! But as for trading for a 68-69 Chevelle, or 70 Cuda, I don't know who wouldn't... LOL. But I prefer the 70-72 Chevelles to the 68-69. Our 74 cars are virtually twins except for the sheetmetal, BRO!! LOL. I was hunting for a nice original sunroof car for a long time, though I would have preferred my favorite Monte year (73). But that, its factory Y-code (big block), swivel buckets, and original condition forced me to snap it up ASAP.

Yes, it was a beauty!  Had it for almost "3" whole months! Blood Red body, with a White Landau roof!!! Burgundy crushed velour interior, if I close my eyes I can still see it! It was parked in front of a friends house, when all of a sudden we hear a horrific crash outside. Went outside, & low & behold there was my beauty totaled by a truck being used in a gunman's getaway, after he robbed a store! Police said he had to be going 70 & lost control!!! That SOB got out of the truck with not much more then a scrath!!
