i have'nt been on this forum in about a year now. newly discovered the link on that other forum. i go by "demodigger" over there.

so here's my favorite relic so far. its one half of a belt buckle from 1833. it would be connected to another similar half but that would have either cross rifles or cannons. this is why i enjoy detecting so much, you can't always know for sure whats next.

Hey, Brian- it's good to see you here. I've now crossed paths with you on three MD forums!

That is a sweet swordbelt buckle half, for sure!

You're definitely right about that "not knowing what'll come up next" comment- detecting is like fishing in that regard- you never know what'll come up! I'd say it's even more exciting than fishing, though, 'cause it's even less predictable.

Here's a button that supposedly dates to the Civil War era, according to the Albert button book's backmark index, but I'm told this style of eagle, the so-called "Chicken Eagle", is a bit later, from the Indian Wars era of the 1870s.  I suspect the latter is correct.

Here's my best relic so far this year.  A sterling silver WW2-era paratrooper badge with a combat star on it.  The guy who lost this probably jumped on Normandy during the D-Day invasion, I would imagine.

I like the FuseTalk platform or whateveryoucallit over on the CU forums better- this format is still odd and unfamiliar to me, but I'll get used to it. (I won't whine again about the jiggling emoticon box I hate so much, since Frank is probably lurking, haha- besides, I don't have to look at them when using this "quick reply" box, I guess...)

Well, let's dump, er, recycle some old pics.  Just enough to make the dialuppers curse my name, perhaps...

Here are a couple of my indian relics I've found over the years.

Here is an Ohio Thebes which is one of Ohio's rare types and is named after points found in Illinois which it resembles in some respects. This type has a T-shaped base with notches which are directed at an angle of somewhat less than 90 degrees. The base is slightly concave and is not as wide as the shoulders and has rounded corners. Basal grinding is present, but not excessive. This example is made of Upper Mercer flint which was quarried from the deposits found in Coshocton Co. Ohio. The time period it is from is estimated between 5,000 to 6,000 B.C.

Next is a Fluted Point, often called by it's western name of Clovis point. Because of the nomadic life of it's makers, the Fluted Point is one of the scarcest of all projectile points.
Most fluted points are finely flaked and have a lenticular cross section with pressure flake scars over most of the blade. The distinguishing feature is the presence of flutes, or long channel flakes removed from both faces of the blade. Some may be well fluted on both faces while others have one flute longer than the other. Some may have multiple fluting scars and others may have only basal thinning. All have lateral grinding which extends for about one-third their length. Most Ohio and Midwestern specimens are indistinguishable from Clovis points found in the West which were associated with the Pleistocene mammoth. (9,500 B.C. to 10,000 B.C.)
Here is the only example I've ever found. Made of Carter Cave Flint quarried from Kentucky.
