With all the treasure found recently, it's driven me to ask this question. How many undiscovered ships are out there? Does anyone really know?

I'll also mention that I'm new to this forum. I've been checking out your interesting finds in other places over the last couple of years.

Who knows if this is true, but I have seen these numbers thrown around before:

http://ezinearticles.com/?Sunken-Ships&id=272827

"... According to experts, there are still about three million undiscovered sunken ship sites that remain intact far below the ocean depths. At present, there are an estimated 65,000 sunken ships in North America alone ..."

i DON'T believe those numbers. not as far as 'intact' wrecks. especially if they are counting vessels sunk in ancient times. there wouldn't be anything left.  i've dived all throughout the keys waters, and the spanish fleet lost many ships along the straits of florida, because they had no way to know when a 'cane was going to hit. they'd be smashed upon the reefs. sometimes you'll run into a rusty old anchor or cannon. but no wood ever remains. (once in a while a few ribs)

There are thousands upon thousands of unknown shipwrecks in every ocean, and I daresay every large body of water, dating from every time period of human history. It is rather fascinating to think about. Nobody will every know how many are out there, and they will continue to be discovered far into the future.

Shipwrecks are of course fascinating for their "time capsule" aspect, and sometimes the violent or tragic way the vessel came to grief.

Don't discount the number of shipwrecks that are now under LAND, as well. Harbors silt in, rivers change course, and so on, so there have been shipwrecks discovered in unlikely and strange places inland, often very deep beneath the ground!

I'm not sure either, but I found some interesting reproduction maps of some ship wrecks that have already been found in the keys.

Being sold on ebay, the posts have ended, but I have been told there are ten left.

the keys waters have been scoured for many years. and that map is for sale to every gullible tourist who hits a gift shop. if mel fisher only had it, he could have saved years. :D i am sure there is still gold down there, and some hurricane will eventually uncover it as the sands shift.

How about a little further south around Titusville? If I get promotion, I will be working in Palm Coast and Deland, so I will have to move somewhere around there.

PM me anytime you like, when you are ready to make a move. palm coast is a huge manufactured community and very crowded with new yorkers. but clean. it simply turned into a montrosity the last few years. good schools however. do not go anywhere near their beachside houses. they don't meet building specs and one hurricane will flatten them.  i lived there all through my kid's school years and loved it, but i don't even recognize it now. as for titusville, that's a bit further south. if you're going there, cocoa beach is nice, the space coast.  if you are working in deland, that is also a good family area. titusville is a very long way south to commute if you are working in deland or palm coast.
