Here is my oldest coin so far. It is Spanish, ( I believe) and is refered to as a "cob". To tell the truth I do not know the exact date on this coin, but a little research on the internet showed it to be in the 1620's range, according to the design. It came out of the ground pretty nice, as do most of the coins in this area, but I did soak it for over a month in olive oil...I'll post some more pics of other finds if you wish...

Well, that is neat.  Where did you find it?  Do you use a metal detector in your searching?

Bring it on!  When I first started detecting a few years ago, I loved going to that photo web site you linked to your sig-line (forget the name of the site).  The one I remember the most... the great story behind one of your gold coins if I remember correctly... hidden by iron and probably passed up by many detectorists over the years.

Out of curiosity, what are your top 3 favorite detecting finds?

Rick..I guess the three I like the best are these:

GOLD!....How can you not like a gold coin...

1781 Spanish Real...I almost quit looking for it. It was in grey dirt and hidden well...My pinpointing skills were still new, and I was struggling to locate the target...

This was the first of the colonial period coins I found. Up until this point it was always lincoln cents, indian cents and mercury dimes.....When I found this, it seemed to justify the while hobby for me...

IF you will allow....I will include this:

This is a 1783 Nova Constellatio Thishas to be included as a tie for the top three, if I can narrow it down to three...I have a few thet will give these a run for the money though..

Those are great Steve.  Thanks!

I remember looking at coins on your web site, but wondered which ones would be on the top of your "personal favorites list."  I figured the gold coins would be there but was curious...

That Nova Constellatio is the first one I've ever seen.  I just looked it up and read some of the history behind it... what an incredible piece of U.S. history!  I can only imagine that your experience in finding that one must have been similar to the first Spanish Real that I found (dropped to the ground, sat there in awe while holding it in my hand and admiring those pillars on the reverse).

Thanks again for posting these incredible finds.  I'd definitely like to see the few that you mentioned would give these a "run for the money"!  Looking forward to it...

Rick

Read the bottom of the pic in the first post, and he states the semi-secret location and the model of the metal detector.  ::nsmile::

I know the general whereabouts of his secret location, and drove past (over) it the other day on my own hunt. I believe he said it was found during road work.  However, the roadbed there is now asphalt again, and you probably can't get at the spot without a jackhammer and some traffic cones, eh, Steve?

But I certainly think about that when I am within a few blocks of the place.

The first British settler in the area, Mark Carr, had his homestead near the spot.

Edit to add: the Mark Carr historical marker I linked to is within a few blocks of Steve's spot, but not on the exact location, in case anyone was planning to cordon off Union Street, take up the pavement, and dig like crazy.  LOL.

(Actually, if you DO dig up Union Street, let me know, 'cause I wouldn't mind getting at the dirt underneath...)  :bigwink:

The marker is only "near" where I do believe the house stood. If you go to the old 1800's maps of this area, you can see where I do believe the actual house Mark Carr lived in. On the corner of Dartmouth and Bay streets...It is labeled as an old tabby ruin. I went there personally and there is an old house located on that piece of land.....sitting on TOP of a tabby foundation..For those that don't know, Tabby was the building material here in the 1700's and earlier....I asked the woman that lived there if I could hunt her land, and she was more than willing. I have not as yet been able to do it tough. She is a pleasant woman in her 70's it appears...Across from where she lives, she said there was an old general store, that she used to walk to when she was a little girl.....It was there years before she was born.! All traces are gone now, but it is begging to be searched...and is close to the bay....within 200 feet of water...

You are right Rob, that coin was found in that area....
