LMTT has been a sleepy little backwater of a place, and I have been unable to get out in the field to find anything worthy of a "Dig O' The Day" story lately (heck, my last one didn't get a single reply... *snif*).

SO, it's time to liven things up a bit, hopefully.

We'll have ourselves a little contest.  Don't worry- anyone can play.  You don't need to have a metal detector, or own scuba gear and a dive boat, or a ruby mine, or anything like that.  You DO need to post a true, unexaggerated treasure tale of your own.  More on this in a moment.

Over on the Collectors Universe Metal Detecting Forum, which I'm proud to know some of you from, I started a monthly awards contest for best finds, which proved popular.  I'm also proud to say they are still carrying on the tradition to this day, though I am no longer the person who posts the monthly polls that decide the winners.

Over there, the competition is divided into categories (Best Coin Found, Best Jewelry Item, Best Relic, etc.)  The polls at the end of each month help decide what everyone's choice of the best finds were (not necessarily the most valuable finds, either, though that earns points).  The winner gets nothing but bragging rights and a little virtual "trophy" plaque for his signature line.

Over here, it's going to be a little different.  First of all, since this is a treasure hunting forum and not just a metal detecting forum, anything goes.  No categories.  Finds may be coins, jewelry, or relics found with a detector, but they may also be coins found in circulation, nonmetallic finds like arrowheads, bottles, fossils, gemstones, gold nuggets, minerals, natural history specimens, pottery, prehistoric artifacts, antique books, and so on, or that old rocking horse up in Granny's attic.  "Treasure" takes many forms, as I've said before.

Here's what it will take for you to win:

You must post a treasure tale of your own: what you found, how you looked for it, and how you found it (or not).  It must be a TRUE, unexaggerated story.  (Well, OK, a little exaggeration is allowed for humorous or dramatic effect if you're going for laughs, but otherwise nothing that changes the facts.)  Scout's honor, here, folks.  Also, it must have been found under ethical circumstances.  We don't want to think you ripped somebody off, right?  (You need not post exact locations or names or anything like that, if it potentially compromises you or someone else).

Remember, anything YOU think of as treasure counts.  But you have to explain to us why it's treasure to you, and make us understand why finding (or not finding) it was exciting, scary, interesting, frustrating, or thrilling for you.  For conventional treasures like gold and silver, this is easy, but if you found a rare bisque doll or a vintage agate doorknob, you'll have to explain what makes it so special, because the other readers and I might not understand, otherwise.  Each of us has our own idea of what's exciting and what's not.  Therein lies the challenge, I suppose.  Sometimes the reason is, "just because I like it."  That can be good enough, if the rest of us agree with you and like it, too.  Maybe you're not the one who found the treasure, but you witnessed somebody else finding it.  That's okay, too- it might not have been your treasure, but it IS your story.  You'll get more points if you were the finder, but that need not always be the case.  Maybe you found somebody's class ring and traced them through their initials, to return it to them.  That definitely counts.

The monetary value of the item(s) found is almost meaningless in this context.  Sure, if you found something valuable, great!  But what earns points here is the STORY of the find, and how interesting the find (or the hunt) was.  The "coolness factor" of your personal treasure quest is what scores the points here; and how well you hold our interest.  You WILL earn more points for good storytelling and/or pictures, of course.  Even if you failed in your quest but gave an interesting or amusing account of the quest itself, you might be a contender.

That's it, I guess.  By now you're no doubt saying,

"Well, geez, LordM, what is this, English class?  You mean I gotta write an essay?"

Not necessarily.  A good picture can be worth the proverbial thousand words, but you'll need more than just pictures to tell your tale, of course.  You can be a person of few words or a verbose windbag like myself.  As long as it's entertaining.

And unlike the Collectors Universe Metal Detecting forum, where the winners of the the monthly contests get bragging rights and a virtual trophy, here you're eligible for a real, tangible "treasure" prize in addition to the bragging rights (and maybe sigline trophies, too, if I get around to that).

I'm a small-time coin dealer on the side, so often the prize will be a coin-usually an older coin, but I'll probably throw out a fossil or relic sometimes, to make it interesting.  (My recent fossil shark tooth giveaway seemed to be a hit).  Obviously, I can't afford to give away super-valuable items, but like the very stories I hope to hear, they will be items with a high "coolness factor".

The winner will be decided by me alone, but if I have a hard time picking one, as I no doubt will if we get good participation, then I might resort to a random drawing of finalists, or solicit some advice on who to pick.  I might even learn how to use the poll feature here on 24, which is something I have not yet tinkered with.

Stories should be posted in their own threads, but to ensure they're considered for the prize, link 'em up here when you're done posting them.  Or nominate someone else by linking to their story.  (Only original stories that were posted on this forum, though, please, not articles from elsewhere).  Linking them to this thread will help me keep track of them.

Ready?  Set?  GO!  Post your treasure hunting tales!

Good grief- if the length of this rambling, windy introduction didn't frighten you off, I don't know what will...sorry!

Oho, so you thought I forgot to post the prize coin, eh?  Nope.  Here 'tis.

Winner will be selected by my birthday, on December 28th, or shortly afterwards.

PORTUGAL: 40 REIS (1 PATACO), 1826, Very Good (VG8) details (some porosity and partial old cleaning).  KM#373, copper.  Better date.  Ex-Andy Lustig, spring, 2007.  Obverse: Petrus IV.  Reverse: crowned arms.

The prize coin is a large, thick, chunky old copper.  It is a Portuguese 40-reis piece from 1826, also known as a "pataco".  It was part of an extremely large hoard that was broken up recently, and I acquired twenty pieces.  All of the pieces I bought happened to be dated either 1811 or 1826, both of which, oddly enough, happen to be better dates in the series.

Are they extremely valuable?  Nope, sorry- their catalog value is modest, even for the better dates like the ones I have.

Are they cool?  You betcha! These things are big and hefty!  They're about the same diameter of an old US silver dollar, but much thicker!  Why, you could put one of these things in a slingshot and drop a charging water buffalo with it, if you were so inclined.  Thwock!

OK, I give up on the whole font selection and size thing.  Keeps going back to "Verdana".  Whatever.

I saw that!!!  ::chuckle::  Thanks for the great contest and prizes, LM!  About the font, you just highlight the text with your cursor after you type it and select a different font, color, bold it, etc.  Then Send/save.

Yeah, yeah.  I tried that.  Evidently I am screwing it up somehow.  No biggie.  I'll stick to the default now, as much as possible.

The wild, glowing fonts, Frank. You can't forget the wild glowing ones.

Or the "shadow" ones. I think I'll type a whole, 29,000-word magnum opus using these fonts, one day. Whatcha think?

Yeah, THAT'LL be readable.  Sure.

Well while doing the sad task of sorting though my mom's stuff after she died in 1992 i found this piece of a necklace, the piece is a fossil of a small fish

and since i loved to look for fossils my family thought it would be in good hands if it was mine, the piece is now part of my collection of fossils and is proudly displayed for all to see and a reminder to me of my mom

I've never considered to have it put back as a necklace piece, to me it's fine as it is

I have no idea where my mom bought it or why, but it must of caught her eye for her to have it, the necklace broke some years before she died and she never had it reset in a necklace, i gather she had her own reasons for not doing that, she had this in her jewelry box after the necklace broke

I know she took it with her to school to show her science class one day and many kids loved it

personally it's a little piece of my mom still in this world, yes i know that sounds odd but that is how i see it

Thank you! We have our first treasure tale!

That sentimental value is often what makes a treasure a treasure.

I've always thought those fossil fish were neat, but I've never had one. I seem to recall dad having a largish slab with several of them, which hung on the wall when I was a kid, but I have no idea what became of them. I think they find those out in Wyoming?

I'll try to pick a winner in the next couple days.  So far I still haven't been able to read everything fully, and see Rick's pictures, since I have been visiting from work, where the server blocks Photobucket images.  (It also blocks 24, but I can get in through a mousehole, for partial content).

I have decided to award the LMTT "Treasure Tales Contest" prize to Rick (Riccar), for his tale, "Old picnic ground produces 3 silvers and a few other oldies…"

But I would be remiss if I did not also award Honorable Mention and a prize to the other Rick (RICKC300) for his story about "A Pound Of Gold".

Congratulations, Ricks!

You've won yourselves some measly prizes, but more importantly, some respect, for Treasure Tales well told!
