First, thanks LM for the fun contest and prize.  This coin is a fun addition to my collection. ::thumbs:: ::sgrin::  (see LM's original contest/post here:  http://www.24hourforums.com/forum124/16860.html)

Second, this coin is huge and you weren't kidding... it could take down a charging buffalo! ::shock::

I tried to scan a picture of the side so you could see how thick this coin is... It didn't come out clearly, but you can get an idea of how incredibly thick this coin is!

Here's the info. from LM's original post, and the picture he added (much better than my scan).

PORTUGAL: 40 REIS (1 PATACO), 1826, Very Good (VG8) details (some porosity and partial old cleaning).  KM#373, copper.  Better date.  Ex-Andy Lustig, spring, 2007.  Obverse: Petrus IV.  Reverse: crowned arms.

The prize coin is a large, thick, chunky old copper.  It is a Portuguese 40-reis piece from 1826, also known as a "pataco".  It was part of an extremely large hoard that was broken up recently, and I acquired twenty pieces.  All of the pieces I bought happened to be dated either 1811 or 1826, both of which, oddly enough, happen to be better dates in the series.

Are they extremely valuable?  Nope, sorry- their catalog value is modest, even for the better dates like the ones I have.

Are they cool?  You betcha! These things are big and hefty!  They're about the same diameter of an old US silver dollar, but much thicker!  Why, you could put one of these things in a slingshot and drop a charging water buffalo with it, if you were so inclined.  Thwock!

Thanks again LM. Already enjoying this one... I let the kids hold it at the dinner table tonight.     My oldest son (3 1/2 yrs. old) said "Penny!  For my bank?"  :)

LM,
By the way, what was the name of the "hoard" this came from? Or, do you have more info?... location, collector/collection, etc? Thought it would be fun to add that info to the flip.

thanks again!

Rick, if your kid has a piggy bank with a slot big enough to hold THAT particular "penny", it must be one biiig pig!  ::chuckle::

Let me see if I can dig up some info about the hoard.  The coin came from Andy Lustig, a bigtime dealer who is "MrEureka" on the Collector's Universe forums.  If I should fail to find the info, you can PM him over there for the story.

Here you go.

As an aside, I just sold the "nicest" of the 1811-dated pieces I had, which was the nicest of the 20 I got from Mr. Lustig.  I got 24 bucks for it.

Your particular 1826 was, I fear, the nastiest "ugly duckling" from the batch, but hey- the price was right, eh?

Even when low grade, cleaned, porous, etc- the sheer size and weight of these suckers makes 'em cool, which is why I thought one would be good giveaway fodder.

That's what I told him!... don't think that one will fit in your piggy bank!

Thanks LM!  Interesting to read the story behind it...

BTW, the "other" Rick (RICKC300) was runner-up in the contest, since I had a hard time choosing just one of y'all as a winner.

I decided to send him something of relatively equal value (about ten bucks, in this case), so he got this tiny little German States coin.  Being very tiny, rather crude, and with a one-sided strike, it is the sort of coin only a German States specialist could love.  Rick happens to be just such a specialist, though, so it was a fitting choice.

It is rather amusing (at least to a coin geek like me) that such a tiny coin could come from a state (or conglomeration of states) with such a huge name: Lowenstein-Wertheim-Virneberg & Rochefort.  What a mouthful.  It almost sounds like a law firm!

This has just reminded me that the time has come for me to post a new giveaway for the LMTT "Treasure Tales" contest #2.

I know I wanna give away a monster megalodon shark tooth fossil one of these times, but I need to buy one, since the one nice one I have left was a personal find which I wanna keep.

So I think we'll do another coin giveaway for the #2 contest. The fossils and other relics can come later.
