Whoever posts the "best" Treasure Tale by Valentine's Day (February 14th) will receive this little coin.

It's not a terribly valuable piece, but it is silver (billon, actually- meaning low-alloy silver), and it's 228 years old.

So post your stories!

Then post to this thread and/or link to your story here, as a reminder that you posted a tale on the forum (just in case your particular story has slid down the page later, by the time the contest ends).

Remember, you don't have to be a metal detectorist or a "treasure hunter" in the traditional sense to post a story- you just need to describe something vaguely "treasure-related"- whatever YOU define as "treasure".  It doesn't have to be something monetarily valuable, either.  Here on LMTT, we're all about "cool and interesting" first, and "valuable" second.  Something valuable is great, and it earns points, certainly, but the STORY (and pictures, if you like) is what it's all about.

And it doesn't even have to be about YOUR find.  You can post about somebody else's treasure.  Remember, though- originality counts, so you can't just copy and paste some treasure news from somewhere else, unless you have a personal angle or link to the story somehow.

Not all treasure is gold and silver.  Gold and silver will win you points, of course, but maybe you found an unusual seashell on the beach, for example, or bought something odd and interesting at a yard sale... whatever.  It's ALL good!

OK, no :cash: value whatsoever. :D

i was out on a friend's boat in the keys, for a day of diving. this friend had a shark phobia, where i just wanted them to smile for my camera. ::sgrin::

so here comes a big toothy shark and i yell "stop the boat". she starts crying ::bigcry::. i dive overboard with my motormarine U/W camera.

the shark takes a powder :runscared: and i look down about 50 feet to see a barnacle-encrusted old cannon! (the keys are noted for ancient spanish shipwrecks.) do we have GPS? no. does my camera jam? yes. so that cannon is still providing an artificial reef for my dinner! here fishy fishy ::bfish::::bfish::::bfish::::eats::

::shades::

LC-

YOU SAW AN OLD CANNON UNDERWATER!?!

Whoa, momma.

Funny how often these stories about lost cannons (on land and in the water) seem to come up. I heard a tale about some deer hunter in upstate New York sitting down on a "log" to eat his lunch, only to find it was a long-lost Rev War cannon! But again, no camera, no GPS- when he left the woods and returned, he couldn't find the site again.

Then there is supposedly a Confederate cannon somewhere in the Chatahoochee River in West GA- I had a friend who said somebody found it in the mud, still on parts of its carriage, so they got a tow truck and hooked up a cable and winch to try to get it out of the mud, but something broke and it went back in. Nobody's been able to get it out since, and the whereabouts to the exact site have again been lost.

Or so the stories go. They're just stories, but they're fun.

Of course, living where you do, I can easily believe YOUR story. There must be ALL KINDS of cool stuff on the seafloor around there, not to mention the river bottoms!

Some of those rusty old cannons are worth just as much, and often, the wrecks that carried them had the gold bars!

Your gold bars were probably there- they were just buried under the sand. :bigwink:

Heh! I disqualify myself because I don't want to ever get in the way of a Member winning something ... not assuming I would or could win, I just play it safe like that across the board (no pun intended).

i know you're right, and every time a 'cane  or a tropical storm blows through, all the sands shift under the sea. you never know what will be uncovered. you, being the experienced treasure guy/pirate :bigwink: that you are, probably take full advantage of that! :D

have you ever been down to the Mel Fisher Museum?

Heh... Cannon.... buried in mud.

I bet the cannon never even BUDGED...

Wreckers can deal with SOME torque from moving a car that's a little wedged...

But most cannon weigh as much as a modern car, and wedged deep into mud (even the bottom 1 foot of the wheels) would be IMMENSE force to be overcome.

I've seen the kinds of cranes the Navy and others use to lift up things like that-- they DWARF most wreckers.. even the semi-haulers...

Here's my story... but my vote would go to the cannon story!  (since my family has always called me a "fish", I'd love to hunt under the water and especially around some old, sunken ships!)

Riccar...you get my vote!

there are a lot of ships to dive on down here, but i failed to mention the rivers. i can recall floating down rivers here, with one eye always open for 'gators. they lay on the banks just looking at you and deciding whether you'd be a good lunch. fortunately they're pretty lazy and simply watch you go by.

when you float the rivers here and look up, it looks very much like a scene from jurrasic park. primeval. you expect a big T-Rex to charge out of the foliage! :runscared:

::shock:: YIKES!!!  sounds like the ships have their own guardians... I'll pass on that swim session! (for some reason that mafia line from the Godfather comes to mind: "he sleeps with the fishes"! ::bfish:::runscared:)

Ok here's one of mine:

A few years ago now, I got up one morning determined to go out metal detecting....All the places I have been hunting were getting to the point that finds were getting few and far between. I headed out to the local recreation center here, that was once a dump, and set out sweeping. This area has been pretty good in the past for silver dimes and buffalo nickels, and the occasional ring or two. After finding a few things a wheat cent and a couple of modern coins, I decided to try out a place I have passed hundreds of times on my route. I pulled into the parking lot of our local waterfront, and surveyed the area....good...not one soul was around, with the exception of a few people near the docks, about 1000 feet away...On the other side of the area is a place that Kut-Kwick mowers are made. Since it was a Sunday, no one was there, so I dragged my detector, nail apron, trowel and plastic mat out of the Jeep and set out toward a large oak in the center of the field. I always hunt around big trees...You can just about bet at some point in it's long life, someone has been around it. After sweeping the area up to the tree I found some older period wheat cents...1910-1918...always a great sign! The biggest drawback was the fact that was a TON of junk mixed in with the coins. Lead strips, metal foil, pieces of lead and pop tops were everywhere...what a nightmare! The good thing was that usually when you find a real trashy area, most of the lazy detectorists have given up, too much trouble......I proceeded to work my way over to a large mound of dirt, no doubt where the land was scraped to level the whole 2 or 3 acres. After getting signal after signal of trash, I got what I thought was a keeper.....carefully sifting through the dirt I found it!....a stick of lead. Sheesh! But along with the lead was a number of old square nails....since this was near the water, less than 100 yds, I figure all this material was somehow associated with the repairs of the ships and boats in this area over the years...I then proceeded toward the waterfront...inching along and digging what trash seemed to read good....later I got another promising signal, thinking ,"Well, here we go again"..I started digging it...After about 3 inches I re-swept the hole again. Ahhh....Still in the hole...I dug out another scoop full...and re-swept again...good...the target was now on my plastic mat. Carefully I moved the dirt around with my hand....Uh OH! I saw something shiny, and it was gold colored! Not getting my hopes up, I have found gold foil and pop tops before, I carefully moved the dirt from around the target...there it was! a gold coin! At least it LOOKED like a gold coin....but this was not just any gold coin.....this was a GOLD Pirate coin! Woooo Hooooo!...A real honest to goodness Gold Pirate coin. The dream of all detectorists! As I wiped the dirt from the coin, I could see that it was in wonderful shape. The details and the date were easily seen. I could see Charles III on the front and the date of 1781!!!!! Let me tell you, if you have never found a gold coin in the dirt, you can not imagine the feeling that rushes to your face....And yet, there it was! I quickly searched all over the area again, just knowing there HAD to be a treasure chest buried there somewhere...but no, just the one gold coin was all I could find this day....but what a sweet one it was. I loaded up all my stuff after a while...There was no way I could concentrate on detecting now, I was too worried I would lose the coin, or someone would take it from me before I could get it to the safety of my home....On the way home I just kept looking at the coin....man...what a dream...to think I was the first one to have seen it on over 200 hundred years, and GOLD to boot.....Boy...I really DO love this hobby....
