Today I stumbled on to a site that started providing Civil War era 3-ring bullets (aka the "3-ringer", or "3-ring minie ball"). The first one I dug today was already considered my "prize of the day," but I had know clue that I'd be digging 1 dozen more! I'm not an expert on these, so I'm not sure if these would be 69 or 59 cal. Maybe one of you CW buffs would know. (Also, these things are very HEFTY! ...can only imagine the damage these things would/could do)
The two on the bottom left were the nicest ones dug today, and one of those appears it may even be a carved bullet (not sure if it just hit something in an odd fashion). No old coins today, but these told me I was in the right area.
Happy hunting everyone.

Most Minie bullets were .58 caliber, but one site I hunted produced lots of really big .69 caliber unfired examples. They were as big as bird eggs. Interesting that you found so many spent ones out there on the West coast- had I found a concentration like that here in Georgia, I would've assumed I was near a CW skirmish site, but since y'all weren't a battlefront in the Civil War, I can only speculate you have stumbled on a site where some target practice was going on in the mid-1800s! Very cool, Rick... that is the kind of lead I never mind diggin'!
