FLORIDA LOBSTER MINISEASON
There's a catch to bagging lobster during miniseason
Recreational divers will have a chance to catch up to 24 lobsters each during Florida's annual lobster miniseason next week

CANDACE WEST / MIAMI HERALD STAFF
Lt. Rob Laubenberger of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission holds a female lobster carrying eggs, which divers are not permitted to catch. For 48 hours next week, lobster-lovers have a chance to bag the spiny delicacies by the dozen.

Florida's annual lobster miniseason starts a minute after midnight July 25 and ends a minute before midnight July 26.

''The reason for the miniseason is to give the recreational harvesters a chance to catch some lobsters before the commercial guys get out there,'' said Lt. Rob Laubenberger of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Commercial season runs from Aug. 6 to March 31.

The miniseason is a mad dash of divers in boats of every size and stripe. They head to offshore lobster beds from Surfside to Boca Raton, including John U. Lloyd Beach State Park in Hollywood, hoping to net the limit -- a dozen a day.

''Between Broward and Dade alone, there were at least thousands of people if not thousands of boats participating last year,'' said U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Dana Carr. ``You could step from island to island of boats.''

Divers must carry a measuring gauge to ensure they don't take lobsters smaller than three inches, and they may not take any females carrying eggs, which appear as orange sacs on the underside.

Catching one of those is a second-degree misdemeanor.

''This is the time of the year that the egg-bearers are around a lot,'' he said as he showed the group a dead lobster with a full pouch of tiny orange eggs attached under its tail. ``If we kill an egg-bearer, then that means thousands and thousands of lobsters won't make it.''

Petty Officer Matt Monaghan, in his third lobster season with the Coast Guard, said the most common violation he came across last year involved people trying to rub off the eggs and pass off an egg-bearer as a regular lobster.

Violators risk notices to appear in court, up to 30 days in jail and/or a $500 fine. Officials from the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Coast Guard will be patrolling.

Laubenberger reviewed the regulations with members of the Coast Guard during a meeting Monday in Hollywood.

Monaghan said that while lobster violations are important, he wants to focus on diver safety this year.

''The biggest danger is for divers out there,'' he said. ``You should make sure you follow all state laws and be as safe as possible. Always go out with more than one person and if you're out there at night, make sure you stay well lit.''

Divers also are required to have a warning flag to let boaters know there is someone underwater. Boaters who see the ''diver down'' flag are required to maintain a safe distance.

Laubenberger said officials will be ready to respond to an increase in diver emergencies. Last year, four divers died in Florida during the miniseason.

''One of the main calls we get is for missing divers,'' he said. ``Whenever we have a missing diver, we treat it like a missing kid. We come out with lights and sirens.''

Mike Russo, the owner of Coastal Marine Diving Supplies in Dania Beach, said the best way for a diver to stay safe is to have a dive plan instead of going with the flow.

He will charter boats and guide divers during the two-day period.

''It gets real busy here this time of year,'' he said. ``Everyone's using their two sport days to catch their share of lobsters.''

When I had my dive shop on the east coast I used to love going out during lobster season. Taking charters was always fun and they usually tipped us in lobster if we had dropped them on a hot spot. ::sgrin::

A couple of us went out one night and came across a lobster walk in about 60 feet, we just moved up the line from the rear picking them up. We had our limit in about 5 minutes. Man, we ate good that night, lobster on the barbie!

Looks like he was out on the 3rd reef judging by the distance from shore. I always liked the sand flats out there. I spent so much time on the reefs that I used to love to just go cruise the rippled sand.
