I am somehow being drawn to boating but I know little to nothing about it... any suggestions as to what I should read/learn first?  Websites? Advise?

I'm thinking I want a boat in retirement in about 5 years.  ...that's about all I know.

:)

Thanks,
Ray

PS.  Please ask any questions you may have to help me better understand what I am getting into, and what type of boat I am looking for.

G is definitely the man to answer, but if i could offer a suggestion..attend any boat shows that you can, to get ideas of what would suit your needs. :)

Ray,

Feel free to ask anything here. Sorry for the delay answering, I've been buried at work.

Choosing a boat is a real exercise in compromise. What kind of boat do you want is the first question, coastal cruiser, fishing, puttering about, passagemaking? Will your wife like it?

I'd suggest going and walking around in some marinas to see what appeals to you, and chat with the owners if you can. Most will be very happy to talk about their boat with you. Also go to some boat shows where you can board them and see what amenities they have. I have a couple links I'll put here later when I find them of good research sites.

I would also highly suggest taking a boating safety class, then consider joining the local power squadron http://www.usps.org which is a boating organization with members who have decades of experience. They can direct you both to and away from different boats and you can learn a lot from these folks who love to share their knowledge.

and never forget the old adage....a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour your money. :D
