MARINE LIFE
Glades count may shed light on manatees' future
An accurate count of manatees in the Everglades could shed light on the future of the species as a whole.

when my oldest daughter was 5, she saw an episode of "Reading Rainbow" about manatees...after that for 15 years, that's all she wanted to do with her life...save the manatees!  Then overnight, she changed her mind, and decided to go into mediation and conflict resolution.  :dunno:

But since then, last year at this time, she got to swim with them up close and personal.  She was in heaven!  :cloud9:

they always came into my 'backyard' (a canal) in key largo. i would get in the water with them and feed them lettuce. they also would drink many gallons of fresh water from my garden hose. they seemed like whiskered elephants in the water. harmless and sweet. :heartbeat:

Several years ago on our family vacation, we rented a Houseboat on the St. Johns River.  She saw one swim by the boat and totally freaked out...screaming and jumping around...scared the poor thing...so she only got a glimpse of it...and then wondered why it disappeared....didn't even realize the racket she had made.   :lmao:

Another year we paid the extra money at Sea World to visit the behind the scenes manatee nursery.   We weren't allowed to touch them, so she just sat with her chin on the edge of the tank and a baby they had rescued came up and got nose to nose with her.   It was so precious! :smitten:

She's already a member. ::thumbs::  :smitten:

Yes, when we visited Sea World we met many victims of boats.  :verysad:  you would think with all the advancements of modern technology they could design some kind of guard to shield the blades.

The manatee population is again on the rise or stable depending on who you ask. Wildlife scientists say it is returning and can likely come off the endangered list, the eco folks say they are still endangered. You can pick which side you want to believe. My observation is I see more manatees than I used to and here far fewer stories of prop strikes and other rescues.

The do make prop guards http://www.rbbi.com/pgic/ has a lot of info on these. As a rule it is the fast boats that hit them.
