Hey guys, I am new to this forum and this sub-forum looks right up my ally.  I am a History student at the University of Arkansas and I always like to talk to others that share my interest.

This particular thread is started because I am about to start a year long "Methods of Historical Research/Seminar in US History" class and it is mainly just a class that I have to write a long research paper (about 30 pages).  I am probably going to do it about secret societies like the FreeMasons, Skull and Bones, ect.

Anyway, I was curious if anybody knew of any obscure secret societies (preferably in America) that I might not know about.

This is actually a forum, not a sub-forum, on a forum website (with many forums).  :bigwink:

Good luck in your search.  That's a very cool topic to do research on.  Were you a fan of the National Treasure movie with references to Free Masons?  I enjoyed it.  :)

Hargis, that is an interesting topic of research.  American history is rich with secret societies attempting to influence government, many quite successfully.  Others were always regarded as fringe groups with no aim but treason.  I find it fascinating how men have always enjoyed creating their own exclusive "no girls allowed" clubs, he-he.

I remember one strange pre-Civil War fringe group called the "Copperheads" or "The Knights of the Golden Circle."  Their aim was to enslave all of Mexico and form a country surrounding the Gulf of Mexico in the shape of a "golden circle".  New Mexico was a part of Mexico at the time, thus their aims raised the ire of many government officials here.
