What do you think? ::scratch::

My theory is that his next term would've somewhat tarnished his reputation.  His lenient version of Reconstruction, particularly the 10 Percent Plan, would've been an invitation for Civil War Part II, or even worse.

What say you?

I remember reading evidence he was likely gay.  I wonder, if he had lived, would more have come out.

The evidence I've read that he's gay is tenuous, at best.  For instance, much has been made of the fact that he slept in the same bed with a man for several years, but such a thing was not all that uncommon, and not indicative of a sexual relationship in the 19th century.

Assuming he was gay, I think it would've made no difference.  Given the mores of the time, it certainly wouldn't've come out during his lifetime.  (Not openly, anyway.)  And if he had lived, he might not have been the iconic figure he is today (as per my OP).

I think there was more to that bed-sharing thing than just the fact they slept together.  There were witness accounts (a mother I think) saying they had an emotional relationship that raised suspicions.  Apparently, there were other things that combined together, given how taboo and hidden it was at the time, indicate a significant likelihood.  That was my impression, anyway.  It's not like I seriously researched it or feel confident about it.

I hear you on the other points, though.  :)

I love talking about my favorite cousin and you'd better take that back Frank, before I come over there.

Abraham is my second cousin.  The Lincolns (Abraham's brother) married the Whites, the Whites married the Slinkmans and the Slinkmans married the Ives.

He wasn't gay, he was married and he loved his wife dearly.  When his favorite son was stricken with a respiratory infection during the Civil War and died, Mary was never the same.

Since he had great plans for a reconciliation and reconstruction of the South, he would have been remembered as even greater than he is today.

Because he died, carpet-baggers took advantage of the poor and the unfortunate casualties of war, creating an everlasting hatred of the North that survives to today.  The KKK ran rampant and it took decades for the South to recover.

Lincoln would have prevented all that.

Saint:

I do not intend any disrespect to your ancestor through this thread.  He was a great man who worked like hell for the preservation of the Union, and in all likelihood knew he was sacrificing his life by pushing for black sufferage.  He was, indeed, a great man.

lol.  That's OK, Brian. I take slams on Abraham in the same vein as assertions that the moon landing was a hoax. Nothing to get too upset about, but deserving a comeback statement.

Interestingly, I saw a show that claimed that Abraham, the greatest President ever, had absolutely no chance of being elected if he had run today.  He wasn't photogenic enough, he was too outspoken sometimes, he was too poor, and he had a tendency to ramrod his policies down people's throats.  (but since he was usually right, that's a good thing.)

Lincoln was definitely more lenient (or merciful, as he put it in his second innaugural) towards the South than those who followed him.  I have often thought that if he had lived, the South would've taken advantage of that, which was my point in the OP.

Now that I'm thinking about it more, though, and given his attitude before the Civil War, it's possible that he would have pushed for a resumption of hostilities, if the South had given him any sh*t.  What do you think, and how would that have altered his place in history?

Lincoln made it completely and unequivocally clear that he considered the worst possible scenario the dissolution of the Union.

If Lee had not surrendered at Appomattox and instead had taken his forces to the mountains nearby to wage a guerilla war similar to the Revolutionary War.  He could have dragged the war on for decades, possibly centuries.

But Lincoln knew just what war was really about.  (His family had fought hard against the Native Americans, and they showed no quarter.)  So just like his authorization of a "scorched earth" policy by Sherman in his infamous march to Atlanta, he would have ordered a genocidal war on the South.  He understood that you must break the will of a people to fight.

He didn't like war, but he knew what it takes to win one.

He did have a brilliant and wonderful plan to reconstruct the South, but for some reason that I can't remember (blast getting old!), his plans were pretty much scrapped after he was asssassinated.

Trivia:  Did you know that Abraham Lincoln was crept up on by an assassin while he was not looking and the assassin shot him in the back of the head?  No not Abraham the President, his grandfather.

His grandfather, Abraham Lincoln, was shot while working in his fields by an indian that crept up and shot him.  Beloved of his family, the Lincolns named their newborn baby "Abraham" as a way to remember their grandfather, never knowing that he would one day suffer the same exact fate.

Trivia:  Did you know that Lincoln was a miserable failure at every single business venture  and lost every election as a politician until the Presidential election?

Trivia:  Did you know that Abraham was kicked in the head by a horse and literally died for a short time as a boy?

Trivia:  Did you know that Abraham suffered from sudden and severe attacks of depression stemming from the time his sister died in childbirth?

If there had been a resumption of hostilities, the decisive victory would have to be quick.  I don't think the North would have kept fighting for decades or centuries.  Lincoln, as hard as he fought, still had to give up the presidency at some point.  It's possible a McClellan-type president would have been Lincoln's successor, and an armistice would've been signed.  Tactical nukes were still more than a hundred years away, so I don't think that the kind of hardware that would've ended a guerilla war quickly were available.

It can't be.  It is physically and biologically impossible to be second cousins with a man who died 130-some years ago.  Not remotely possible. I stand by my previous assertion of despising liars.
