From AD 1000 until now, who do you believe has had the biggest impact on history and why?

I was reading something about Hitler and his interest in the occult just last night.  One of Hitler's inner circle gave a interview at Nurnberg and said that Hitler had "the most evil stare he had ever seen" he went on to say that he was sure Hitler was possessed by demons.  Interesting reading, but of course he did not explain why he followed Hitler.

I would have to choose someone from the Renaisance or Enlightenment periods. I'm not completely sure who. Maybe Samuel Adams, firebrand of the American Revolution. Maybe Adam Smith, expounder of free-market capitalism.

All right, I've settled on someone: John Locke for his contributions in philosophy that set in motion the ideals of the Enlightenment revolutions and the reevaluation of human rights that they embody.

Tough to pick a historic figure that stands above all others!

My first impulse would be Guttenberg.  On the other hand, it just might be J. C. R. Licklider, founder of the ARPAnet, which would eventually become the Internet.  He was a computer pioneer, visionary, and all-around freakin' genius.

On the other hand, if you're talking about who history will actually remember, Licklider would be way down on the list, I suppose...

Actually, I was thinking of someone maybe from the sciences, like Jonas Salk?  Maybe someone else can come up with a different science person.

We're looking for the biggest impact so I was thinking someone who affected many, many people and I figured someone like Salk would be at least a good place to start?

Good answers so far though.

:)

Karl Marx has to be in the top 10. Millions died in the name of communism via Stalin, Mao, et al.

Here are several people I would consider contenders:

William the Conqueror
Martin Luther
Johann Guttenberg
Isaac Newton
Thomas Jefferson
Charles Darwin
Winston Churchill
