If you were able to go back in time and change one event, what would you change?  What do you think the impact of that change would be?

Great point, to think of the human suffering and the loss to humanity and our culture caused by those 6 million or more early deaths is almost more than the mind can bear!

However, there was at least one positive outcome of the Holocaust, that being the birth of the modern nation of Israel.

Not really historically significant to a lot of people, but I'd find John Couey and shoot him in the head.  When he was about 20.

I'd keep my sister home for a half-hour longer one night last August. Or my brother-in-law one night a year and a bit before that.

Nope, not historic. But important to me.

As for history...I'd go back and warn that cop that stopped Timothy McVeigh on his way to the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. He saw the fertilizer, saw the UHaul, didn't report it. Oops.

Good call.  I like the others, especially the one about your brother-in-law, too.  I wonder how that cop feels today?  If he lived.

I'm not sure I would change anything. I'm fearful of the consequences of such a change. The big, horrible events have often led to (what I consider to be) great advances in human society. Out of personal sacrifice comes social progress (or something like that).

i cannot see social progress coming out of the murders of millions of innocents. if EACH human story were known we would shed copious tears. history is written by the winners, and retrospect is very convenient.

If it were not for the Holocaust, would national Israel exist? I consider the existence of the nation of Israel progress.

I'd go back and observe but make no changes. The law of unintended consequences could produce a worse outcome than the original act.

I'd probably have Neville Chamberlain taken out.  His policies toward Germany set the whole ugly thing in motion, IMO.

There was an episode of the new "Outer Limits" series in which a woman with access to a time machine would wait until each serial killer was convicted and executed, and then she would go back before their first murder.

Woman with large revolver: "I'm here to carry out that just and legal sentence."

Man who doesn't realize what he is destined to become: "But I didn't DO anything!"

I wish I could have influenced Eve to have resisted the Serpent's wiles so that sin would not have entered the world and caused so much suffering.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39
