I tried to once.  I love going to museums and looking at ancient Greek and near east pottery.  The UPenn archeology museum is a must see if your ever in Philly.

I found out though that the collecting end (at least a few years ago) is rife with so many fakes and outright stolen items that it would make a persons head spin to know how much stuff is shady that is out there.

You really need to do your homework, know someone who is qualified expert or prepare to pay the premium through the large auction houses to get good stuff.

I agree, there are a ton of fakes on the market.  However, I have been dealing only with the most respected dealers.

I would love to have something from Babylonian times or early Greek. But am stuck in early American now. Something about pre 1850 things has gained my interest. paintings, coins, newspapers, Eastern U.S. Indian artifacts, 1700 old maps. Two years ago it was all about the industrial revolution and beyond..............I'm working my way backwards.

I used to dabble with early American artifacts, I still have a newspaper from 1805 which is kind of neat.  For me however there has always been something about an ancient artifact that I can't quite explain, this feeling of connection that I get from little else.

I made a hobby out of looking for 13th to 16th century artifacts in Japan and found lots of interesting things (roof tiles from castles destroyed before 1600, shards of Ming china, etc.) In my searching I found the neck of a jar from Japan's Kofun Jidai (Tumulus Era, approx 3rd century BC). Apparently the local castle built around 1550 was constructed on top of an ancient tomb.

I didn't actually get to collect any of my findings. I gave everything I found to the local museum along with a topo map showing where each bag of items was found. I was sorely tempted to keep a nice piece of light green Ming porcelain, but my sense of duty ot the town's history overcame my greed.

Those are interesting items Colin, do you know how old they are?  Also, what part of the world were they found in?
