Perhaps we can list a few.

Personally, I really appreciate a hot shower, and feel it must rank among the top 10, if not number 1!  Anyway, indoor plumbing certainly is one of the most important.

I suppose that the car was also one of the most important inventions of all time.  It allowed a meaningful and significant personal expression of independence, and it's also a great time machine.  Not to mention the usefulness of the portable bedroom it entails.

Electricity is also pretty valuable.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

The Printing Press...Hands down.  Think about it, a book is a miracle.  When you open its pages the ideas and thoughts of a person that might have been dead for centures can flow right off the pages and into your mind.

Without books, each successive generation would have to relearn all that previous generations had taken lifetimes to understand.  With books, the accumulated knowledge of an entire lifetime can be assimilated in minutes, giving the next generation a jumping off point thousands of years ahead of their natural age.

Only thus is a civilization built.

I'll go you one better:  Written language. ::thumbs::

Second, I would have to put the computer.  These days, there are people w/o running water (let alone hot or cold :bigwink:) that still have cell phones. :)

Too bad they are on the way out.:?

I agree with writing being the greatest invention.  Some of the food production technologies that allowed us time to do other things has to be up there to.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up worn out screaming what a ride..

An electric chair ?.......eeeew gross !, REALLY ?, A nasty way to die even if you are a mudering, raping, violent scumbag.

I'd go for decapitation with a very sharp sword in public. All executions should be made public and should be mandatory viewing, I support the concept of a death penalty but believe that EVERYONE must take a common responsiblity in seeing justice being served.

Inventions ?

1 - refridgeration

and.........

The compass, Gunpowder, firearms (::sgrin::), matches, paper, printing, toilet paper, vaccination, parachutes, belt drive, blast furnace, crossbow, horse collar, kite, landmines, lottery, pendulum, rockets, the ships rudder, silk, windmill, wheelbarrow, umbrella, stirrups, steel, postal system, porcelain.

The chinese invented lots of other stuff as well.
