I would hate to have that be someone I loved sitting there, dead and having people stare them...............  I always wanted to be in forensic science, I thought the idea of finding murder victims would be interesting, but I've never liked the idea of dead people being shown or looked at once they've been buried.   I just feel they deserve to rest in peace.

i suppose to modern people the corn sacrifice looks whacko, but corn was probably the most important thing in their lives.

A perfectly preserved ice maiden discovered in the Andes was fattened up before she was offered up to the gods as a human sacrifice, researchers report.

The 500-year-old frozen remains of the "Llullaillaco Maiden" and the seven-year old "Llullaillaco Boy" were found in 1999 at a shrine 25 yards from the summit of Mount Llullaillaco, a 22,110ft (6,739-metre) volcano on the border of Argentina and Chile.

New studies of the child mummies show that the children chosen for a one-way trek to a summit shrine, some time between 1470 and 1520, were groomed for death over a period of about one year.

The team, led by Dr Andrew Wilson at Bradford University, analysed hair samples taken from the heads and from small accompanying bags of four mummies.

"A chilling story has started to emerge," says Dr Wilson, who reports the results with Dr Timothy Taylor and colleagues in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The team studied DNA and isotopes (chemical signatures) from the hair samples, which give a unique snapshot of diet at different intervals: more than a year before death, the children ate vegetables such as potatoes, suggesting a peasant background. Subsequently it was enriched with plants such as maize, considered an "elite" food, and protein, likely to be dried llama meat.

Changes in the isotopes in the final months suggest that the children then began their pilgrimage to death, probably from Cuzco, the Inca capital.

The team found traces of coca in the hair, which would have been given to alleviate the effects of altitude sickness. Coca leaves, the raw material of cocaine, are still chewed in the Andes for the purpose.

Llullaillaco Boy met a horrific end. His clothes were covered in vomit and diarrhoea. His vomit was stained red by the hallucinogenic drug achiote. However, he appears to have died by suffocation, his textile wrapping having been drawn so tight that his ribs were crushed and his pelvis dislocated.
