The only known complete piece of needlework Narrative to survive the Middle ages

The tapestry is more then 230 feet long and 20 inches wide, worked in 8 colors of wool on a bleached linen field, presumably made by William the Conqueror's wife Matilda and her ladies in waiting  to serve as a commemorative wall hanging for the Cathedral of Bayeux in Normandy

Amazingly the tapestry survived two fires and The pillaging of subsequent wars

It records the defeat of king Harold Godwinson  and his army at the hands of William the Conqueror's army

it depicts the events leading up to, and including the battle of hastings in 1066.

A very interesting piece of history that is still intact and gives us a look at how the battle unfolded

But the amount of time it took to make such a historical item must of been months or years but yet the tapestry has no mistakes in it which is quite amazing considering the length of the tapestry and the amount of detail included

I visited the battlefield once right around sunset. It was eerie. In some odd way it didn't seem like it happened all that long ago.

I saw the tapestry in all its glory on a 10 day school holiday to France when I was 11. The whole was unfurled along its whole length set in a covered walkway behind very thick glass, with burly security guards at the entrance and exit.

A sign at the start of the walkway indicated "no sneezing, coughing, talking, do not touch the glass, walk at a slow pace, do not run". It's an impressive sight but very fragile now.

I have managed to see some awesome French tapestries at the Museum of the Middle Ages in Paris, but have not yet seen the Bayeux Tapestry. WOW. An amazing piece of history.

History - yes!! And a potent reminder of the links between France and England. I have family in both camps, so to speak - but my particular interest is language, and 1066 had a massive and lasting effect on the language we now call English.
