How is life (in terms of morals and ethics) now as compared to the past?

By morals and ethics I don't mean simply "did people believe in these things", but did LIFE reflect that belief in action?

Knowing that one's religion (in most cases) defined a set of moral and ethical values didn't mean that they were practiced at all times..

This is what I mean by "was life BETTER"?

If you feel that there were MORE morals averaged across the entire last 500 years, and you believe that people PRACTICED those morals BETTER long ago, then you'd say "now things are worse, back then they were better"

get it?

Were we better off as serfs and villagers in the Dark Ages?
Or are we better off morally and ethically now?

Note-- this is NOT about economics, how long you lived, how many people survived childhood, etc--

This is intended to be about how much you could:

1. trust everyone around you to do the right thing
2. trust your leaders to do the right thing for the masses of the people instead of themselves only
(to some degree, anyway - I realise that NO leaders have done a perfect job of anything)
3. Have various freedoms, and see any hope of actual guarantee of those freedoms "working"
Things like that-

btw-- this is a GRAND span sort of question.

I don't want discussion of "The Crusades" or "Vietnam" or something like that to be skewing the picture.

That's why I put this out to an AVERAGE over the last 500 years... to avoid the spikes of short-term events like this or that war, or this or that ruler.. or even the existence of this or that particular nation.

Consider the BIG picture-- men, women, children, etc-- for 500 years!

And perhaps not just in Europe either --- though I'd say we 're all most familiar with that and North America.

Discuss---

Armed with the power of Thy name nothing can ever hurt me, and with Thy love in my heart all the world's afflictions can in no wise alarm me.
