I hate to say it but he would be branded a terrorist in any other country.

I will remember him as a soldier..........following orders regardless of his personnel opinions. A very brave soul indeed.

I don't think he'd be branded a terrorist in any other country.  There was a war on.  And not some "hide like cowards among the civilians until one of our IED's goes off" war, but a real conventional war, where people were fighting to the death.  The Enola Gay (along with the follow-up plane that hit Nagasaki) probably ended up saving thousands of lives on both sides.  And that's not counting the lives saved by nuclear arms since then.  (If you plot the loss of life through warfare on a graph, it increases steadily until after WWII, and then drops precipitously.  And that's no coincidence.)

Two thoughts come to my mind:

1. The generation that defended liberty against the worst sort of evil is passing away at a rapid rate.  Sad to say, but very soon the last voice of that great generation will fall silent.  We had better learn all we can from them while we still have them with us.

2. I believe the decision to use atomic weapons against Japan was the right one, many more lives would have been lost if we had been forced into a ground invasion of Japan than were lost by using the a-bomb.  However, I am glad that was not my decision!  I don't believe I would have ever been able to sleep in peace again if I had been forced to make that choice.  Far too many innocent people died, children, women and old men just trying to live their lives.  It is not my place to second guess Truman and his military advisors from 62 years in the future, but it seems to me we could have targeted militry targets rather than cities.

The dropping of atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a disgusting act of war.

Unfortunately the rape of Nanking and the ritualised torture and murder of allied prisoners of war, male, female and children was also a disgusting act of war.

Two wrongs don't make a right of course but if the bombs hadn't been dropped ( and I think the reality of those devices and their consequences are abhorrent) the allies would have been forced to fight for every treetop and hill in Japan at a far greater loss of life.

The dropping of those bombs and the devastating effect it had haunts me, the systematic and cold blooded brutaility of the Japanese in China and Burma also haunts me.

What really bothers me Ninja is that it looks like we could see them used again!  Perhaps very soon.  Pakistan looks like it is on the verge of falling to bits, we can guess based on the history of that region that radical types will move into power and find themselves armed with nukes OR that in order to retain power the current rulers will resort to the unthinkable.

OR India will see the situation as an excuse to invade Pakistan

OR Iran could get the bomb and attack Israel

Or some terror group could get a small nuke and we could wake up one day and see a mushroom cloud rising over New York, London, Paris or Washington.

Or any of a dozen other situations could play out.  I hate to say it, but if one or more of the above does not happen in the next five years I will be suprised.

As I have mentioned in another thread, having a fundamentallist christian primate as a president for the last 7 years with his finger on the button ("tell me when lord, let me be your tool of destruction lord !") I'm suprised it hasn't happened already.

India and Pakistan ? meh :dunno:

Iran and Israel ?, meh :dunno:

Mushroom cloud in London ?, Nazi's tried flattening London in WW2, been there done that.
