There have been larger ships, faster ships and ships that could claim greater luxury, but is some unmeasureable way the RMS Titanic captured the spirit of her age in a way that no other ship has ever done. Part of this of course is due to her sinking, but even before she sank she was seen by the general public as a special sort of ship.
To me it is neat to think that there is still one person living who sailed on that ship. Although the Titanic was launched in 1912, to me it is the last expression of the Edwardian Age. When it slid under the cold waters of the North Atlantic that night and took 1500 souls with it, it also consigned to an eternal grave the spirit of that age in which it was created.
