Well, since Lincoln arrived at the cemetary from a different direction and in a carriage, I'd bet this isn't him. The building that the captions on the pictures in the slideshow refer to (the "one with the arch shape") gives a reference. I'm a Civil War re-enactor, which does not give me complete authority on the subject (far from it), but I am extremely familiar with Gettysburg, having been there many, many times. The structure in question is not the entrance to the cemetary (it is, however, quite close by). It also gives a reference point for the direction from which the man is approaching, which is not the direction that Lincoln approached from. Finally...he didn't ride a horse to the event. He was in a carriage.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but as an amateur historian, I would much rather be accurate than sensational.

Real doubtful that it's Lincoln. There were several dignitaries there wearing tophats who had beards.

I don't think it's Lincoln.  There's absolutely no way to tell, though.  I wouldn't want to hang my hat (stovepipe or otherwise) on such a blurry photo.  And I'm uncertain what historical significance it would have, even if it was him.  We certainly don't need photographic evidence that Lincoln was at Gettysburg when the Gettysburg Address was given!

While that could be Lincoln, how can anyone say for sure?  The photo is of such poor quality, that the shape which looks like a person in a tophat could be anyone.

There are always re-enactors in Gettysburg.  You can't walk around the town and not see people in period garb (PLEASE don't call them "costumes"!).  I always do, no matter what time of year I'm there, I will always be dressed in 19th-century clothing.  There are encampments often.  However, there are some that get more attention than others.

"History Meets The Arts" is the second or third weekend in April.  It's a fine-arts festival combined with an encampment.  The group I am with (the Civil War Heritage Foundation) always encamps in front of the Wax Museum across the street from the Visitor Center; it's "our" spot.  We are actually under contract with the city, and they make a donation to the group for our time.

Rememberance Day is the Saturday closest to 19 November (this year's was yesterday, in fact).  19 November is the anniversary of the Address, and it's always well-attended.

The (with apologies to Rose Bowl fans) Granddaddy Of Them All, however, is the actual battle re-enactment.  It takes place on the first weekend in July.  The anniversary of the Battle is 1-3 July.  Next year's will be the 145th anniversary.  The population of the town triples during that weekend.  There are usually around 30,000 re-enactors, and nearly as many tourists.  The battle is recreated as accurately as we can make it without actual casualties.

Hope this helps!  Feel free to ask questions, but if we want more discussion on this we might want to take it to another topic to avoid too much thread drift  ;)

Cool, love to know tidbits like that about people, especially when it is so far from anything I have done.  ::thumbs::
