Well he was a 16 yr old newly enlisted sailor with the rank of Boy First Class, his job on the British light cruiser Chester was to assist the sighting of the forward 5.5 inch gun
At 5:35 the Chester found herself under heavy fire from 4 German light cruisers , within 5 minutes the whole forward gun crew was cut down, but somehow he remained standing despite being gravely wounded by a shell fragment in his chest
for the next 15 minutes he remained standing at his gun "He felt that he might be needed, as indeed might have been" wrote the captain of the Chester to his mom
When the Chester limped home he was rushed to a hospital where he died on Jan 2
He was buried with full honors and For his action under fire he was awarded posthumously the highest honor for valor The Victoria Cross
He was the youngest hero at the battle of Jutland
