There certainly have been a LOT of theories ! Everything from the Royal family, to Royal doctors, to American con artists, to American....artists, to ritualistic masonic conspiraries, to a female anti-abortionists, even theories about homicidal paranormal entities a la Springheel Jack. My own personal theory is that the killer was a man (or men, I'm not sure the murders were all committed by the same person) of no real consequence or fame who happened to be a homicidal mysoginist. The murders ended because he/they either died, or got institutionalised for non-homicidal errant behaviour or left England. Like the Cleveland torso murderer and the Zodiac killer and Bible John, we will probably never know for sure.

The ripper had some medical training, was the only one killing, knew how to avoid the cops, seems he was smart but cruel, maybe a young man in his 20's to early 30's with major mental problems Whoever he was smart enough not to be caught, he knew that area where the women were killed, maybe a customer or someone who lived in that area, did these killings out of pleasure, he made it a game with the cops seeing if they could catch him Most likely he died of some illness or was killed himself

I think the victorian tabloids made him/her more of a celebrity because of the nature of his/her crimes, at that time in London prostitution and the degradation of the working classes of which prostitutes were often classed as being the "working girls" and "scum"would have singled them out as being "morallly" and "religiously" unacceptable. I think a morally outraged maniac could have been the perp.

and to add to that...prostitutes are easy prey, and to this day are the frequent targets of serial killers.

Perhaps LC is best suited to answer this: Is there a way to profile the Ripper based on his crimes? What would that tell us about what sort of person he was?

precise, methodical, intelligent. he dissected those women. of what class, i don't know. whether it was outraged morality or frustrated sexuality. i don't know that i agree he was a doctor, a good butcher could have done what he did. he certainly did know anatomy and was not an enraged out-of-control beast.

Would you say that he knew and felt safe in area where he did his deed? Does the fact that he does not appear to have engaged in sexual relations with any of his "subjects" tell us anything?

i'm not certain we know whether he engaged in sexual activity. he usually excised their sexual organs. in any scenario, he was very angry at women. clearly he was familiar with whitechapel area and could fade into the shadows and fog.

There was no evidence of molestation, rape or sexual abuse of any kind in any of the ripper murders. The killer appears to have been an "escalation killer", the first murder involved merely slashing the victims throat from behind with some minor cuts done to the abdomen post mortem. Compare that with the final murder where the victim again had her throat slashed but was then brutally and methodically dissected, skin stripped from the legs and arms, internal organs removed and placed in various locations around her bedsit room etc. The killer got more and more daring and reckless after each murder in an "escalation" effect where the need for each murder to be more brutal is what fuelled their "desire" and "needs". The fact the murders ended so abruptly indicates that the killer either died or disappeared, because the compulsion to commit even more brutal acts would have made it impossible for them to just stop.

i was thinking Ninja, in all my studies of homicides, other than our own lizzie borden, England has the most esoteric, spooky, fascinating, evocative, creepy and weird murders of anywhere else!! Yay!

I believe the Ripper was not the sort who would have just stopped his killing or gotten better. However, he was known to wait as long as two months between killings. It seems to me that he would get a "fix" then guilt would hold him back until the urge to kill was so strong that he could not resist it. That guilt may have caused him to kill himself after his last and most outlandish murder, but I think the odds are much better that he either died or was himself murdered. The east End in 1888 was a hard, cold place and life was cheap. If one could locate a list of everyone who died there in December 1888 to about January 1889 I am sure the Ripper's real name would be on the list.

If one could locate a list of everyone who died there in December 1888 to about January 1889 I am sure the Ripper's real name would be on the list. but what if the ripper wasn't a resident of the east end?
