Curator unearths photos of Lincoln inauguration

sorry for link, only way to show photos. i grew up in Maryland, my Dad took me to many civil war sites which i did not appreciate at the time. one thing that did impress me was visiting Ford's theater and also the site where he died, across the street,  the bloodstained pillow hypnotized me.

i wish i had appreciated it more when my Dad dragged us to all the civil war battle sites.

our next door neighbor was the grandaughter of Dr. Samual Mudd, who was wrongly imprisoned for setting john wilkes booth's broken leg. a nice and very interesting lady.

Cool stuff.

I can't reasonably expect my kids to be as enthusiastic as I am about historic sites, but maybe I can plant seeds of interest in them.

planting seeds works!

i was reading European history at 13.

my Dad gave me that interest.

my kids now tell me that the books we had in the house have inspired their interest as well.

you know what hurt me? my history teacher in high school was an auschwitz survivor. he had numbers tattooed on his arm. his English wasn't good, and my classmates ridiculed him. i still think of him with love. they were so stupid and ignorant. God bless you wherever you are. ::rose:: i never forgot you.

Amazing ... I didn't realize/remember that they were able to take photos at that time. I never would have guessed there were any photos at all.

i think i take things for granted. raised in DC may do that. i was at JFK's funeral. i will never forget the white house draped in black or the cold wind that day the caisson rolled by. i froze.

Oh, goodness, yes.  The ideas behind photography were developed (ha) several decades before the Civil War.  The first photograph was taken in 1826 by an amateur chemist named Joseph Nicephore Niepce.  It was a view from the second floor of his country home in France.  (URL - apparently I don't know how to make links anymore - to a good informational site about it:   http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/exhibitions/permanent/wfp/)

As for Civil War photography - google "Matthew Brady" sometime - he was an incredible photographer.  I have a friend who is a photographer and has a studio in Gettysburg - Rob has some of Matthew Brady's lenses, and still uses them.

ETA:  Well, nevermind...apparently it makes a link all on its own....nifty.

Abraham Lincoln suggested buying slaves for $400 apiece under a 'gradual emancipation' plan that would bring peace at less cost than several months of hostilities.
