The University of Rochester is displaying a collection of letters written by or to President Lincoln. One, believed to be his last letter, was written on the afternoon of his death. Link to the letters at the end of the article. Lincoln letters on-line Now you can experience a part of history in your own home. The Abraham Lincoln letters collection at the U.R. Rare Books and Special Collections Department is offering a window into Lincoln's presidency on-line.The nation was engaged in a great struggle. The President struggled with a great question, how to abolish slavery and preserve the Union? The collection is housed at Rush Rhees Library on the River Campus. "The collection is very important in and of itself because it contains some crucial letters from Lincoln and to Lincoln, and some letters that are less well-known but say very important interesting things," said Brian Fleming, a library curator. These are among 72 letters Abraham Lincoln penned in hs own hand. In addition, there are more than 200 letters written to Lincoln in a day before telephones and when use of the telegraph was still limited. A letter to Ill. Senator James McDougal in 1862, Lincoln proposed the idea of gradual compensated emancipation. $400 would be paid for each slave. Lincoln thought it would shorten the war, which was costing the government $2-million a day. "It's one of the very important documents in the collection. And it's a wonderful document. And it's part of a long history of consideration of emancipation in this country," according to Fleming. But Congress never approved the idea. Lincoln's Secretary of State, William Seward, lived in Auburn, N.Y. His grandson donated the initial Seward papers in 1949. The Lincoln letters came from the Emerson Foundation in 1987. One letter to Seward, dated April 14th, 1865, read "Please assemble the cabinet of 11 a.m. today. General Grant will meet with us. Yours truly. A. Lincoln." It would be among the last things Lincoln ever penned. He was shot at Ford's Theater that night and died the next day. "And the fact that it can be on-line is important because it's available then to scholars around the world and to students around the world," said Fleming. The Lincoln letters are considered one of the jewels in the crown at the U.R. Rare Books and Special Collections Department. Rochester has a unique connection in that abolitionist Frederick Douglass knew Lincoln personally, and would visit the president at the White House.
