This is one of the things I love discovering in history--

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_nobile

I don't care so much for what war started when, what general won it, and so on...

But this kind of minor detail I find to be  a facinating kind of insight into what people commonly thought and did (about their houses in this case)

"The piano nobile is often the first or sometimes the second floor, located above an (often rusticated) ground floor containing minor rooms and service rooms. The reasons for this were so the rooms would have finer views, and more practically to avoid damp. This is especially true in Venice where the piano nobile of the many palazzi is especially obvious from the exterior by virtue of its larger windows and balconies and open loggias....
Larger windows than those on other floors are usually the most obvious feature of the piano nobile. Often in England and Italy the piano nobile is reached by an ornate outer staircase, which negated the need for the inhabitants of this floor to enter the house by the servant's floor below. Kedleston Hall is an example of this in England, as is Villa Capra in Italy.
Most houses contained a secondary floor above the piano nobile which contained more intimate withdrawing and bedrooms for private use by the family of the house when no honoured guests were present. Above this floor would often be an attic floor containing staff bedrooms."

Neat stuff!!!

This is the sort of thing that ISN"T in your high school or even your college textbook of wars and generals and kings and dates of births and deaths...

Dunno much about piano nobiles (that sounds like a fancy, highfalutin' piano), but I'm a confessed Wikipedia addict. I used to start out on something like your page there, and then jump from one of those other links in the story to the next topic, and by the time I was done, I would find myself wondering where I'd begun. I can start out looking for what the Hawaii state flag looks like, and end up reading about some obscure British punk band.

Wikipedia-hopping is fun. :)

Someone has to ask...how did you come across that page?

Honestly, I can't remmeber.

I suspect it had something to do with the Georgia/Russia conflict.
I know I was on Wikipedia looking for a few C&P details about the fall and assimilation of Hungary into the USSR in 1956. Last thing I looked up on Wiki, so far as I can recall.

I don't recall what the search term was --- or it might've been a "article of the day" that caught my eye on account of the "piano" word-- which naturally would've gotten my notice!
