Last night I watched a show called "102 Minutes" on the History Channel.  It had footage I've never seen before (like a lobby counter with blood all along it, presumably from the victims of "exploding" glass on the front of their building) as it was comprised mostly of stuff by amateur video tapers that just happened to have their cameras going, although one guy was a pro doing work at Times Square.  It was very moving.  After it they did a half our show on the people who did the video taping, which was very cool.  It was moving to hear what they thought as they were taping.  One girl didn't quite register it was people jumping out of the building.  She wasn't prepared to accept that level of darkness, etc.  It was also creepy seeing the faces of firefighters and others mobilizing to go to the WTC knowing they never made it out.

The damage, fear, and drama for the few block radius around the WTCs was more intense than I think most people realize.  The "smoke clouds" were more "solid" than most people think, too.

There was a documentary aired in the UK a couple of years ago that consisted of footage shot by a french documentary team, the docmentary was about the New York fire department and just as the documentary crew were set to leave the fire crew got the call that the first plane had hit.

The film crew rode with the fire crew to the lobby of the first tower, you could clearly see and hear the impacts of dozens of people throwing themselves to the ground, shattering glass followed by a loud bang and blood spraying like a lawn sprinkler all over the windows.  The crew went upstairs to save as many people as possible, the building collapsed before they could get out but luckily the structural integrity of the place they were at was strong enough to hold long enough for them to get out.

Then all you could see were peoples shocked faces all covered in grey ash wandering around the streets like zombies.  A bizarre and terrible day,

I saw that film by the french documentary team - I think they were brothers if I remember correctly. It was excellent.

Yesterday, Kim and I watched a show (also on the History channel) called "The Rise and Fall of the World Trade Center.  The show began with the attack, and then most of the show covered the boon of high rise buildings in big cities, how they were designed to be taller, etc, and also the advent back in the early 60's of the idea for a world financial district in Manhattan.  I found it interesting that an entire several block area of businesses were bought out to be demolished to build the WTC.  The area had been called "Television row" or something like that because back in the 40's and 50's, when more and more people were buying TV's, stereos and radios, a whole area of stores sprang up, all electronic stuff.

Many of the store owners protested that they were, in effect, being kicked out of the area, but the speculation that progress was progress and having a financial center was the way to go for the area.
