Cool beans. MOSCOW - A Russian archaeologist says he has found the lost capital of the Khazars, a powerful nation that adopted Judaism as its official religion more than 1,000 years ago, only to disappear leaving little trace of its culture. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080920/ap_on_re_eu/russia_lost_capital

Ok The guy has not found any real proof that these ruins are the captial of the Khazars, all he has found are ruins of some buildings, but hasn't found anything really linking those ruins to the Khazars Should be interesting to see what these ruins are

"By law Khazars could use flamed bricks only in the capital, Vasilyev said. The general location of the city on the Silk Road was confirmed in medieval chronicles by Arab, Jewish and European authors." Sounds like this is his basis. Many things in archaology are like this === believed to be, because of some statement elsewhere, yet to date no specific undeniable proof has emerged from the site. Archaeology is not the black/white "is it true/is it not true" science that many of us laypeople like to think. For a large number of Biblical sites, for example, there are various schools of thought, each competing to prove something. Yet, if the authors and supporters of a particular school of thought are better writers/publishers/negotiators with the publishing houses, speaking engagements, etc -- then we the laypeople HEAR their idea more often --- and it ends up in published textbooks. Sometimes the most successful theory about some historical event is not necessarily the RIGHT one --- it's the theory that got the most successful marketing done. These days with all the politiking, buying of dinners, doing speaking engagements, etc -- it's often the professor who does better at THAT whose ideas are better known and more often believed. while the nerdy quiet introvert grayhaired professor who'd rather spend his time studying an artifact than publishing papers about is absolutely unknown --- even though he may well be far more competent. This is the real meaning of the phrase "publish or perish" in the academic world --- Those who publish get recognized, right or wrong. Those who don't publish, aren't recognised=== even if they're right about something. This guy could be completely wrong about this --- but because he's published about it, he's going to get "credit" in the minds of many laypeople and no few other historians. Laypeople tend to want to believe that the process of "peer review" is somehow a perfect thing, that everything which is written goes through the process of competent people reviewing it and not allowing it to be published before it's proven, etc --- but it's much more common for infights to run for decades about what something means or what something was, without any serious conclusions being reached as to the truth of anything Meanwhile, publishing goes forward...
