Hangover Helpers
Find out what helps you feel better when you've had one too many

WebMD Weight Loss Clinic-Feature
Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD

What hangover cures pop into your throbbing noggin after a night on the town?

Some say burnt toast and a Mexican sausage called chorizo do the trick. But just in case the quick fixes you tried last time didn't fix anything, and you still plan to do more celebrating in the future, we've assembled some home remedies that helped some of us get through college.

But first, here is the official word on what that booze does to your system. Getting rid of the hangover really comes down to understanding how the body reacts to alcohol in the first place. Alcohol is a diuretic -- that is, it tends to increase urination, and therefore, dries you out, explains alcohol metabolism researcher James Schaefer, PhD, professor at the Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. Drinking plenty of water the morning after helps to compensate for the dehydration.

But that's not all that's going on. Impurities are added to alcoholic beverages during the distillation process, and these contribute to the nasty stomachache you get with your hangover. These impurities are especially high in sweeter drinks and malt liquors. Drinking lots of water, then, does two things: it rehydrates your body and dilutes the impurities left in your belly.

A Date for Carbon

When Brian Wakabayashi was at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), he always made burnt toast a part of his morning-after breakfast.

Schaefer has this explanation for why that helps: Carbon in the charred part of the toast filters the impurities. In fact, people who come into hospital emergency rooms with alcohol poisoning get a potent carbon slurry pumped into their stomachs for the same reason. The burnt toast is a much more moderate version of the same remedy.

A new hangover helper called "Chaser: Freedom From Hangovers" also contains vegetable carbon and there are claims it can help prevent a hangover by absorbing the elements in beer, wine, and spirits that cause hangovers.

But emergency room physician Ronald Charles, MD, says there isn't any science to back up the claims that you can target the hangover-causing elements in alcohol and block their absorption.

"I haven't seen any research that says 'these are the things in alcohol that cause headaches,'" says Charles, who is medical director of the Lyndon B. Johnson emergency department at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.

Charles says alcohol is also rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and only stays in the stomach for a short time, which means it's unlikely much of it would be absorbed by an anti-hangover product.

FAT CHANCE

How about that chorizo? It's not a morning-after remedy -- more like a late-afternoon-before preventive tactic. Cole Ramsey, also a former UCI student, swears by its hangover-preventing powers and doesn't leave home without some -- in his stomach, that is."It's fatty, and it sits in your stomach for like 12 hours. For some reason, the hangover goes away," says Ramsey.

Schaefer explains: Fatty foods, if eaten before drinking alcohol, "grease" the lining of the intestines. The alcohol then takes longer to be absorbed by the body.

"Personally, I recommend eating pizza, but chorizo would work too," Schaefer says. "In the Mediterranean, one folk remedy involves swallowing a spoonful of olive oil to do the same trick."

Besides filling your stomach before you drink, eating almost any kind of food the morning after can help alleviate a hangover, says Stephanie Brooks, MS, RD, a nutrition consultant in San Francisco. Food provides electrolytes that replenish the body after dehydration. This is especially important for someone who's vomited within the last 24 hours. Brooks particularly recommends a fruit smoothie or a sports drink.

Blood And Alcohol

Of course, a hangover's not a hangover without a pounding headache. Schaefer explains that the pain comes from a mix of dehydration and your body's adjustment to the rapidly dropping blood-alcohol level. He recommends taking two aspirin before going to sleep and another pair when you wake up, if the headache's still there.

What about that "hair of the dog that bit you?" It's a renowned hangover remedy: a small morning-after drink to bring your blood-alcohol level back up.

It's the absolute best remedy for Steven Chinn. "I'm not 100% clear about the science behind it, but I've noticed that continual buzz equals no hangover."

To those willing to try this approach, Schaefer offers a quick lesson in biology and a word of caution."Biologically, it actually will make you feel better for a short period," says Schaefer. "Of course I wouldn't recommend it, because you'll have to come down from your high eventually. Besides that, it's a habit that can very easily lead to a drinking problem."

Will They Work? It All Depends

How effective any of these remedies will be depends on how much alcohol you can handle and how many drinks you actually put down the night before. It takes the average 150-pound man about an hour to fully digest a standard drink, Brooks explains -- that's roughly how much alcohol is in a bottle of beer, a glass of wine, or a standard shot of hard liquor.

"There's no magic vitamin that you can take," she says. "If you're going to drink a lot, you're going to pay the piper eventually."

Alcohol Can Be Deadly

There are two warning signs you should take very seriously because they indicate you or someone you're with is going past his or her limit:

Multiple vomiting. This is simply your body's natural way of quickly getting rid of the toxins in alcohol -- not a bad thing by itself. But it can rapidly lead to potentially life-threatening dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Lay off the liquor and start drinking lots of water.

Passing out. If someone drinking heavily passes out, and doesn't respond when you try to wake them, take that person to a local emergency room. People in that condition are in danger of choking on their own vomit or going into shock.

"It's common for people to see a friend with these symptoms and say, 'Oh, Fred's just a lightweight, he'll be fine,'" says Schaefer. "But passing out is a serious medical emergency, and it's always better to err on the side of safety."

Leave Your Car Keys at Home

Remember that if you've had too much to drink, no amount of burnt toast or chorizo is going to make you a safe driver. Assign a "designated driver" -- one person in your group who abstains from alcohol and drives everyone else home safely. Or make arrangements to have a cab take you home from your revelry.

9 Myths About Your Hangover

WebMD Feature from "Marie Claire" Magazine

By Dana Hudepohl

How to wake up without regretting the night before (at least as far as alcohol is concerned)

MYTH #1
A MORNING MIMOSA EASES A HANGOVER
Not for long: The “hair of the dog that bit you” remedy just pushes a hangover to later in the day. Hangovers set in when blood-alcohol levels start to fall; the worst symptoms strike when levels reach zero, says alcohol researcher Robert Swift, M.D., Ph.D., of Brown University. A better a.m. cocktail: Gatorade, to replace lost electrolytes (the chemical messengers that help your body function effectively), and water, to counter dehydration (which can leave you weak, dizzy, light-headed, and cotton-mouthed).

MYTH #2
POPPING ACETAMINOPHEN BEFORE YOU GO TO BED MAKES MORNING EASIER
You’re wrong about two things: Choice of drugs and timing. When you take acetaminophen, most of it is converted in the liver to harmless compounds. But when you’ve been drinking, the liver is so preoccupied with metabolizing the alcohol that it processes the painkiller in a separate pathway where these compounds can become toxic, causing liver inflammation and permanent damage.

Stick to ibuprofen, says David J. Clayton, M.D., co-author of The Healthy Guide to Unhealthy Living. And, he says, don’t take it before bed: The drug’s effectiveness peaks in about four hours, so it won’t do anything for you by morning. Clayton’s best, use-it-only-when-you-have-to Rx: “Get up and take 800 milligrams of ibuprofen an hour before you need to be functional. You’ll feel awful when you wake up to take it, but you’ll feel much better an hour later.”

MYTH #3
DRINKS WITH FEWER CALORIES ARE ALWAYS A HEALTHIER CHOICE
As if. According to a study by Chris Rayner, M.D., of the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia, people actually get more drunk after ordering up diet cocktails. The reason? The fewer calories in the drink, the more quickly it empties from your stomach. Blood initially passes through the liver, where some of the alcohol is filtered out. But faster emptying saturates the liver, so more alcohol ultimately makes it through to your bloodstream.

MYTH #4
EATING BEFORE BED WILL ABSORB THE ALCOHOL AND MUTE A HANGOVER
Nice try, but food has to be in your stomach before you drink to help a hangover. If you’re busy digesting steak, your martini will be delivered to your bloodstream more slowly, giving it less of a chance to accumulate to the headache-worthy levels. (All food slows digestion, but fat does it best.)

MYTH #5
WINE IS BETTER FOR YOU THAN BEER
Wine gets all of the health props, but studies consistently show that people who drink beer in moderation also receive health benefits—including a lower risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and osteoporosis. And when it comes to how you feel the next day, beer is the gentler choice. “Specific compounds in red wine, like tannins, can trigger headaches in susceptible people,” says Swift, “and that just adds to the hangover.”

MYTH #6
DRINKING THROUGH A STRAW GETS YOU TRASHED FASTER
Only if you suck faster than you chug. It isn’t how you get the booze from glass to mouth that affects your buzz; it’s the type of glass you’re drinking from. A Cornell University study found that people—even experienced bartenders—consistently pour 20 to 30 percent more alcohol into short, stout tumblers than into tall, skinny highball glasses. “They focus on the height of what they are pouring at the expense of width,” says study author Brian Wansink, Ph.D., author of Mindless Eating.

MYTH #7
IF YOU WEIGH THE SAME AS YOUR BROTHER, YOU CAN MATCH HIM DRINK FOR DRINK
“Women will always get more intoxicated on a smaller dose than men”—even if you’ve diligently built up your tolerance, says Swift. “Men have a higher percentage of water in their bodies, so if you dump alcohol in there, it’s going to be more diluted.” Plus, men have higher levels of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which allows guys to metabolize alcohol better.

MYTH #8
IF THE DRINKS ARE FREE, THE CALORIES DON’T COUNT
Ok, we know you don’t really believe this, but something does happen when someone else is paying that can make good judgment disappear. Take a look at the true cost of an open bar: Four Mike’s Hard Lemonades sabotage your diet with 880 extra calories—the equivalent of five Krispy Kreme glazed donuts!) And that’s not counting whatever you tear into during the 3 a.m. munchies.) Four beers fill you with the equivalent of two McDonald’s cheeseburgers.

MYTH #9
BEER BEFORE LIQUOR, NEVER SICKER
There’s nothing about the chemistry of these drinks interacting with each other that makes you sick the next day. With any alcohol, your inhibition to drink more diminishes as you drink, so you start drinking faster. If you stick with beer, you don’t get drunk as fast because its alcohol content is lower than that of liquor. If you switch to the hard stuff, you end up on the express train to hangover city.

The Day After the Night Before

WebMD Feature from "Health"

by Eric Steinmehl

A quick review of new and popular remedies—not that you'll need them, of course.

If you plan to snag a third glass of Pinot Noir at the Christmas party, Tulane University researchers want to tell you about a new way to sidestep a hangover: prickly pear supplements, made from a cactus that grows in the Southwest.

In a scientific test, college students who took the supplements 5 hours before drinking to excess (as instructed) wound up experiencing less nausea and dry mouth, and were half as likely to say their hangovers were severe. Prickly pear's antioxidants help fight hangover-causing inflammation, the researchers explain. "It's one of the few good studies to demonstrate that a hangover remedy helps," says Anil Minocha, MD, director of digestive diseases at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. You'll find the products at some health-food stores as well as online retailers.

[size=Hangover helpers: The good, bad, and foolproof]
Rebound Hangover Formula contains B vitamins, vitamin C, and dextrose, among other things. Anil Minocha, MD, of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, says, "It could be helpful. B vitamins are involved in some of the reactions to clear alcohol from your system, and dextrose can keep your blood sugar up." Details: http://www.reboundhangover.com.

Elixir Morning After Tonic contains several fruit and herb extracts, including ginkgo, milk thistle, and feverfew. Ginkgo is an antioxidant, and proponents claim it can boost energy and increase blood flow to the brain. Feverfew is often used as a headache reliever. Evidence that it works is scant, however. Details: http://www.elixirtonics.com.

Alka-Seltzer Morning Relief contains aspirin and caffeine. Says Minocha: "There's indirect evidence it might help. Salicylate (aspirin) is known to relieve symptoms." Available at drugstores.

Chaser contains charcoal and vegetable carbon, both reputed to soak up impurities that could cause a hangover. "I'm dubious," Minocha says. "It could theoretically absorb some of the impurities, but they tend to not stick to it well." Available at most drugstores.

Smart strategies, like taking a nap before a night out, not drinking on an empty stomach, and having a glass of water for each drink, can help, too. "The only foolproof prevention," Minocha adds, "is not to drink too much."
