We always have brushed our teeth, Aethelred, but it's only in recent years that teeth have become VIPs.  Prior to this they were just teeth.  (It's another myth over here that Americans are obsessed with teeth, but it seems we're the same now...with the exception of the people you met, and probably quite a few more)

The Italians seem to favour surrender almost as much as the french, seeing as they completely succumbed to the facist ideal (in fact they started it, modern fascism was born in Italy not Germany).

But when it comes to actually fighting the Brits, Americans and Canadians that landed in Sicily, they didn't seem quite so keen. The Roman empire was a lllooonnngg time ago it seems !

As least the French weren't part of the Axis !, and they did resist ! (wthout the efforts of the french resistance D-Day would never have happened).

But hey, its all in the past, swings and roundabouts.

Here we go again.  Goodnatured fun and gentle teasing always seem to degenerate into racial hatred and bigotry.

The other forum I used to post in happily and enthusiastically got to the point where anyone non-north-American or non-British-Isles didn't stick around for long.
