Hi, Everyone.

I correspond over e-mail regularly with someone who lives in the UK, and they refer to time in a 24-hour timeframe all the time (e.g, 15:30, rather than 2:30PM).  Is this a regular Britishism?  I always feel like I'm either in the military or reading 1984 when I read that. :)

Brian, I don't know anyone who uses the 24-hour timeframe all the time.  I may be wrong but I feel it's not that common over here.

Never known the British to do that. We do here in Norway a lot.

By the way....... 15:30 is 3:30 PM, not 2:30

i use it all the time (almost) it's a military or cop thing, not inherently British, who are 5 hours ahead of eastern standard. (GMT).

If it's not a Britishism, then my working theory is that it's easier to type "13:30" than it is "1:30 PM", etc.  It might just be one of those creeping Internet colloquialisms.  (I can't stand most of those, but at least this one would denote a modicum of intellect..)

A large part of the world doesn't use the 12hr clock?  ::scratch::

I haven't used 12 hour clock since I was taught 24 hour clock in primary school.

24 hour clock makes more sense and is more practical than 12 hour clock, but I work for the police and 24 hour clock is the method of time recording used in the force so perhaps I am biased.

Use it all the time here in Norway. Once you get use to it it is automatic (it took me maybe 2 days to get use to it).

It is 13:20 here right now

In Australia, I guess the 12 hour clock is still more common. But these days things run day and night  and people work a variety of hours too. Particularly in land and air transport timetables, the 24 hour clock avoids misunderstandings and is gaining ground. I use it a lot myself.
