Are our supermarkets really interested in the environment or are they just trying to make more profit by pretending to be?

I know that I should try harder to use the numerous "bags for life" that I've purchased over the past couple of years instead of forgetting and leaving them at home or in the car, and then using new plastic carrier bags when I shop.  I know that staff have been directed to ask shoppers at the checkout if they actually need new bags, but I still see it as more of a money saving exercise on the part of the major chains than as an environmental issue.

What do you think?

I think it's definitely a money saving device for the grocery stores, but it makes me feel good when I help the environment anyway.

The latest thing here is the store I shop at selling sturdy canvas bags for 99 cents each.  I have bought several.  Not only do I use them in my day to day life, to carry things.  But I do use them at the store.

They have them here too, Marie.  I use the canvas bags all the time.  My husband even reminds me to bring them along when I go grocery shopping if I forget. ::chuckle::

I have found that now that I am using the cane, I think it is much easier for me to use the canvas bags on a daily basis, just to carry things around. Not just at the market. It is easier especially if I am carrying library books, or things for work. You cannot put alot of weight in them, but they sure are handy.

Funny you should mention that.  I use them to bring supplies to my mother at the assisted living place.

There's no reason it can't be both.

I always keep one or two in the car, in case I need one for anything.

Good idea Marie! ...I do that as well so that I have them already there for when I go to do my grocery shopping and don't have to try to remember to put them there to take with me.  Also makes it easy to bring things for my mother. :D

Also keep an insulated bag in there.  We shop alot at one of those stores that is cut rate..you bring your own bags.  I bring my groceries out to the car and bag them up out there.

I had an idea to make these bags and sell them at the local farmers' market. Didn't have time this season but I'm seriously considering crocheting all winter and having a bunch of them (crocheted string bags) ready for the spring.

That's a great idea, Erinna.  There was a lady at the farmer's market that we went to today who was selling all sorts of items that she had knitted and crocheted.  I bought a cute little crocheted hat for a friend's 9 month old grandson.

we don't have grocery stores here that do the whole "use one bag forever' kind of thing.

They just pass out the plastic bags. And we use them around the house for garbage bags. Especially next to the baby changing table -- since that gets several bags a day!

Strangely enough, in Israel almost 20 years ago,  we had these bags (called "layam" bags after the store)
They were some _tough_ bags.. made out of the same woven plastic strapping (but solid, not strips) as lawn chairs used.

I once carried a 30lb amplifier and microphones and cables in one - probably about 50lb altogether.
Carried it in that bag for months, without so much as a rip in it, nor did the big wooden handles give way.

I still have my 'layam' bag here at home, decades later and it's still going strong...

Turn thou unto God and say: O my Sovereign Lord! I am but a vassal of Thine, and Thou art, in truth, the King of kings. I have lifted my suppliant hands unto the heaven of Thy grace and Thy bounties.
