I know that I should try harder to use the numerous "bags for life" that I've purchased over the past couple of years instead of forgetting and leaving them at home or in the car, and then using new plastic carrier bags when I shop.  I know that staff have been directed to ask shoppers at the checkout if they actually need new bags, but I still see it as more of a money saving exercise on the part of the major chains than as an environmental issue.

What do you think?

The assumption is you are merely carrying your shopping to the boot of your polluting car which you then drive away.

I am carrying my bags to a bus stop to catch a bus so I need strong available bags that can carry what I have purchased when I need them.

You burn up more carbon in your own personal car getting home with your shopping than 100 plastic shopping bags.

Sad but true.
