i posted this as a link because there are a number of links to story in the body of the article. this is not commonplace in England. i've been following this case all along, and asked Ninja what he thought. it does not sound good.

Boy, a plea from her mother on Mother's Day. That's heartrending.

I'm for more defense tactics being taught to children at earlier ages.  Especially, "Stranger, Danger!"  Which seems to have been downplayed lately.

Shannon mother's tearful 999 call

Shannon has not been seen since 19 February

Mother's 999 call The recording of the 999 call reporting the disappearance of a missing nine-year-old schoolgirl has been released by detectives.
Her mother, Karen Matthews made the call to West Yorkshire Police saying her daughter had failed to return to her home in Dewsbury on 19 February.
Mrs Matthews appears to be in tears as she tells the operator she had searched everywhere for her daughter.
Shannon was last seen leaving Westmoor Junior School.
The 71-second long extract from the call reveals Mrs Matthews, a 32-year-old mother of seven, (there are 5 different fathers to the 7 children, i would expect the authorities have scrutinized all of them)in tears as she tells the West Yorkshire Police operator her daughter has not gone missing before.
'No arguments'
The distraught mother said: "I have been everywhere I can think of friends-wise, family and everything."
She goes on to say there were no arguments at home and Shannon went to school as normal in the morning.
A huge search by West Yorkshire Police officers has failed to find any trace of her.
Earlier it emerged police have gathered a full DNA profile of Shannon which will be used to aid searches in places she may have been since her disappearance.
Detectives said the profile, along with her fingerprints, had been pieced together from personal items including schoolbooks.
Det Supt Andy Brennan made a fresh appeal for information on Tuesday.
More than 200 officers and 60 detectives are involved in the investigation, which Mr Brennan said amounted to 10% of West Yorkshire Police's operational strength.
Sniffer dogs have been used to search more than 500 homes in Dewsbury and detectives have also questioned known sex offenders in the area.

I watched a commentary earlier that compared the media coverage of this little girl's disappearance with that of little Madeleine McCann.  The latter was really high profile whilst this is scarcely mentioned now, after just a few weeks.  It makes you wonder why...surely both disappearances are equally important?

i have had trouble finding news about her also. in all honesty Theia, i feel it's a class issue.

like over here, if they're white and pretty they get lots of attention in the media when they are missing.

Maddie's parents wealthy and media savvy, and Maddie tiny and cute. Shannon won't be featured at wembly stadium and have celebrities come out to suppport her.

I think you're 100 percent right, LC.  And, as you say, celebrities are certainly not queueing up to support the search for little Shannon. It's a scary thought that we are all so easily influenced by status, class and appearance.

Mother fears daughter was 'taken'

Karen Matthews said she has not given up hope

Mother and partner The mother of missing schoolgirl Shannon Matthews has said she fears her daughter has been abducted by someone known to the family.
Karen Matthews said the nine-year-old, who was last seen leaving her school in Dewsbury on 19 February, was not the kind of girl to run away.
Stepfather Craig Meehan also denied accusations that he hit the youngster.
Mrs Matthews said Shannon was not unhappy at home and added: "She's got abducted. That's all I can say."
Asked if she thought it was someone she knew, the mother-of-seven said: "It seems that way because there's no trace of her at all.
"There's no trace of her swimming costume, her towel or anything like that that she's taken with her."
Mrs Matthews told the BBC's Radio 4 Today programme that she believed the reason someone had taken her daughter was to get at her.
Asked why someone would do it, she said: "Just to hurt me, really."
Shannon's stepfather also denied accusations made by other family members that Shannon was unhappy at home. He said he had a "good" relationship with the youngster.

Mr Meehan said: "To me I know it's not true. All I'm focusing on is finding Shannon. I want her home.
"Even her real dad believes me. He says Shannon has always looked up to me."
The pair said they thought comparisons made between them and the case of missing Madeline McCann were "unfair".
Mr Meehan said: "It's two families from two different backgrounds and they shouldn't be compared."

if true, this is great news!

Missing West Yorkshire schoolgirl Shannon Matthews has been found alive, it has been reported.
West Yorkshire Police are yet to confirm that she has been found but said they were investigating reports the nine-year-old had been found.
She was last seen at Westmoor Junior School, Dewsbury on 19 February.
The force said the operation was the biggest missing person's case it had undertaken since the hunt for the Yorkshire

edited to add:

West Yorkshire Police confirmed the girl had been found concealed in the base of a divan bed in a house in Lidgate Gardens in Batley Carr.
Neighbours said police smashed their way in and emerged carrying Shannon who was last seen leaving Westmoor Junior School in Dewsbury on 19 February.
A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of abduction.

That has made my day, LC. What an incredible turn of events. Hopefully, Shannon and her family will now get all the help and support they'll need.

the police have their concerns about her safety still. it seems the man who abducted her is a relative of her stepfather. i hope more is learned in the next few days.

Shannon has been put under an emergency protection order and will remain in police care while officers establish what happened to her.

Shannon was held in house a mile from her home by a relative whose own children had been taken from him
