well, the Brits were never known for culinary delights! :D .... except prime rib and yorkshire pud! ::eats:::drool:

British home-cooking 'is becoming extinct'

Traditional British dishes such as toad in the hole and spotted dick could disappear from dining tables by 2021 as households increasingly turn to foreign cuisine, it has been claimed. New research shows that Britons rarely make dishes such as steak and kidney pie or jam roly-poly from scratch any more, and are far more likely to cook curries and pasta meals from recipes.

The survey by Tesco found that only five per cent of 18-40-year-olds had cooked a spotted dick, compared to 14 per cent of 41-55-year-olds.Simlarly, six per cent of the younger group had made a Beef Wellington compared to 15 per cent of the over-40s.

Tesco claims that the five above dishes - as well as coronation chicken, sherry trifle and Lancashire hot pot - are prepared so infrequently that they could disappear completely by 2021.

Foreign dishes, however, are thriving. For instance, 71 per cent and 62 per cent of under-40s had made spaghetti bolognese or curry, respectively.

The research has prompted Tesco to publish a list of "endangered" recipes on its website. Mandy Minichiello, of Tesco.com, said: "It would be a tragedy if these treasures of our culinary heritage are lost forever."

Simon Coombes, of the Pudding Club, a group that promotes British puddings, said: "Traditional British meals and puddings are hugely important as comfort food and as an indulgence."

This is such a shame, and I'm hoping for a revival. I grew up eating a lot of those dishes. Maybe Tesco has done British food a favour by bringing up the topic.

Thank you very much for this info, Lady Cop.  I have to send it to our good friend who lives in Canada now but was born and raised in England (North Shields area).

Sorry, I can't hear the name "spotted dick" (which is for sale at my local - very American - grocery store) without thinking that it sounds like some sort of strange disease that only men get.... :O

I just googled it and "dick" referred to hard cheese back in the 1840s, which doesn't help at all!  But I know what you mean, it's the one pudding you'd point to on a menu rather than asking for it aloud!

LOL, surely a name-change would take place if it were marketed in the U.S.

What about Treacle Pudding? When I asked a British girl my son was dating, "What in hell is a Treacle", she didn't know :eew:

And if someone asked about "Spotted Dick", I'd probably refer them to the nearest clinic ...

Treacle pudding is on the grocery store shelf right next to spotted dick, right here in Detroit. I've never worked up the nerve to actually pick up either can, but there they are.

And I have a hard time finding ketchup! But I do like the supermarket in the summer and will try to look for it next time I wander in there.

Well, this is a first.  We were watching Dancing With the Stars this evening, and the British judge mentioned whipping up a batch of spotted dick.  I actually was able to explain to my husband what it was, thanks to this thread.  ::chuckle::

Now, whipping up and spotted dick shouldn't be used in the same sentence.
