New hydrogen powered car by Honda could be answer to fuel crisis

This hydrogen-fuelled Honda could one day be the answer to Britain's deepening petrol crisis.
The FCX Clarity is powered by an electric motor and can go 270 miles on a single tank of gas.

With a top speed of 99mph, it is three times more fuel efficient than a conventional petrol car and twice that of hybrid vehicles.

It also generates zero emissions as it emits only water vapour - making it probably the greenest car in the world.

But there is a snag - only 200 are being made over the next three years - and Honda believes it will be 10 years before it can begin mass production.

The Japanese car maker has got more than 50,000 online applications in the US alone for the family four-seater. But only celebrities and a chosen few will be able to get their hands on one.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis is getting one of the first. Others will go to selected buyers in Southern California, where hydrogen fuelling stations already exist.

Honda president Takeo Fukui commented: "If we can bring costs down by a certain amount, I think we can start on mass-production.

"These vehicles are necessary for the environment.

"We would certainly like to make them more popular."

Fuel cells generate electricity in a chemical process combining hydrogen and oxygen, with the only emission being water.

The Clarity has a 129hp electric motor and 171-litre tank, which is refuelled with compressed hydrogen gas. A lithium battery stored under the rear seat provides power when driving off in cold conditions and rapid accelerating.

The only hydrogen garage in the UK at the moment is at the University of Birmingham.

But three stations are due for the Capital, where Transport for London is planning a fleet of 70 vehicles from next year.

At least 12 stations are expected to open across the country by 2010.

Oil is a finite resource so alternatives like this are certainly worth pursuing.

Yeah, but doesn't it take electric power to crack the H2O and get hydrogen in the first place?

So aren't you trading off air polluting power plants for car emissions?

Hi, Saint.

That's the way the hydrogen is produced right now, but I don't see any reason why the energy can't be gotten from some other source (e.g., solar or nuclear).
