Hottest day of year hits 28.1C but now summer is over..

Boiling Britain basked in the hottest day of the year yesterday as temperatures hit 28.1C (83F).

But don't stock up on sun cream just yet - because forecasters reckon the grey skies and showers are on their way back.

As the UK put traditional holiday hotspots such as Tenerife in the shade yesterday, southern sunlovers flocked to the beaches of Brighton and Bournemouth for a paddle.

The North was also scorching, with Hull hitting 26C (79F) and Newcastle at 24C (75F).

And there were blue skies and temperatures of 20C (68F) right up in Aberdeen.

Even the wildlife got into the holiday vibe - with a squirrel spotted tucking into an ice-cream in London.

The temperatures were well above the average 21C (70F) for this time of the year.

Rebecca Davidson, 31, from West Moors, Dorset, was on the sand with her daughter Jessica, three.

She said: "I'd heard it was going to be the hottest day of the year so dug out Jessica's bucket and spade and headed to the beach. It has been absolutely glorious and is as good as being abroad."

But it is due to be a gloomier story today as grey skies and cooler temperatures are expected across the country. The grim weather is set to continue into the weekend - with showers and temperatures between 17 and 19C (63-66F).

Met office spokeswoman Sarah Holland said: "Tuesday was the hottest day of the year so far - with temperatures peaking at 28.1C.

"But it will be a very different story today and into the weekend.

"It will feel a lot cooler and showers will spread across the country from the South West."
