Thousands of pets dumped by owners hit by credit crunch.

Thousands of pets are being dumped by owners-the latest sad victims of the credit crunch.

The Dogs Trust said it has been inundated with abandoned pets at its 17 UK centres.

Families can no longer afford vets' bills or have had to downsize and move into rented flats that ban pets. The trust said: "We want landlords to allow pets."

Sad for the pets, no doubt, but about landlords: they're just going to have to raise rents to cover the damage and costs associated with allowing pets.

I agree with you there, people can often say their pets are well behaved but then there are those who lie about this and the owners find that their homes have been damaged.  My aunty had her own home and had a letting agency to rent out her home.  Unfortunately, the tenant who stayed in the property did not pay any rent and my aunty's carperts and furnishings had to be destroyed because the tenant was filthy.  The tenant also had lots of cats and the cats were not looked after, the cats would be infested with fleas which would then cause an infestation in the house.  In fact the house was that infested with fleas that they got through to the next door neighbour's house!

It wasn't until after the tenant was kicked out of the house that I went to stay there whilst my aunty went on holiday to look after the place.  I found that fleas were jumping on my legs and the carpet looked like something was moving on it.  It's making me itch just noting this down.  In the end we got a someone to deal with the problem.

Everything from smells to accidents add up, too. Many pet owners don't smell their pets the way a new tenant would.
