I actually know more about my dad's side of the family than my moms.  All four of my grandparents immigrated from their native countries...mom's from Poland, and dad's from Sicily.  Dad's parents were from Catania, Sicily.  They came here through Ellis Island.  My cousin did the whole family tree thing for us.

The furthest we have been able to go back was the Battle of Orleans in 1428.  Apparently the Ives family was rewarded by Joan of Arc for valor in that battle.

I am also related to Abraham Lincoln.  I am his cousin twice removed on my mother's side.  The Lincolns married the Whites, the Whites married the Slinkmans, and the Slinkmans married the Ives.

All of my grandparents immigrated from Warsaw and Krakow.  Back then I believe they were part of Austria-Hungary.  The grandparents and my great aunt came through Ellis Island in the very early 1900's.  I believe my great aunt came on the ship that was right before the Titanic.

My paternal grandmother's family owned a farm and grew hops for beer.  My grandmother used to tell me about how she could go out into the yard to pick a fresh piece of fruit right from the trees.  She could get fresh milk from the cows.

All of them came over to the U.S. with barely a dime in their pockets.  My family has come a long way, baby!

This is so much fun to read!  Families are important and realizing your roots and where you are from is important. Everyone has a story, we just have to find it.

Wow, thanks for the link, Colin:

Apparently, the Ives go back even further to the Battle of hastings, 1066 AD.

We even made it to America in the 1600s. I guess we always were pioneers. (No wonder I live in New Mexico!)

Someone in my family traced my maternal grandfathers family back to England, and then to Scotland. I am a member of the Knox family from Scotland and a descedant of John Knox the Scottish reformer.

My maternal grandmother's family came from Germany. We haven't done a search on them, yet.

My paternal grandfather was from England, and not much has been done there that I know of.

Nothing is known about my paternal grandmother. She was adopted, and there are no records as to where she came from, or where she was born.

There is also a great, great grandmother who was full Cherokee.

I have a book in French that my mother gave me that goes back in Canadian to the 1500's mostly names from churches that was researched by my Aunt. On my fathers side it is the coat of arms of England. I think the most famous person that I was related to was Rockwell Kent a painter I barely remember him as he died in the early 70's I still have a couple paintings he did for my Grandfather.

So this thread got me thinking a little and I did a search on Uncle Rockwell this is what the N.Y. times said about his death.........

When Kent died, The New York Times described him as "... a thoughtful, troublesome, profoundly independent, odd and kind man who made an imperishable contribution to the art of bookmaking in the United States."     ......damn.:verysad:

My edit time is limited, so I downloaded a couple pages of my French book..........

An upside down crest..........::scratch::

Followed by a generation explanation I have found that working backwards is always better.

This goes back to the 1600's

Marriage................

...........and a new arrival in Oh! C a n a d a !..........1638 before dat France and some wine growing place . But thats as far back as this Vol. goes.

I liked the way this book was edited and realize that it may have been 40 yrs in the making. I would like to thank my great Aunt Therese. This book is 568 pages long and is volume III There are 2 more earlier volumes tracing the tree back even further. My guess is that with the span of this volume 1638-1997 it may even go back to 900 A.D. if 300 years were spanned on each volume. That would be very early church records.

     Should I get them?
