If you own a forum website, do you handle trolls consistently or do you let them sort of live in certain areas?  To you like them because of the controversy and drama?  What approach do you take to trolls in general?  Have any persistent ones or serious problems?  Do you cut them off early and ban them?

I think anyone who's got something signifcant to say should be given some lattitude.  If it's clear that someone is simply trying to antagonize people, he or she isn't welcome, as far as I'm concerned.  I haven't gotten a lot of that in my forum, but if I saw someone being abusive towards others, trust me, my wrath would be terrible...

I have not really run into anything like that yet on my forum.  I had one instance where someone made a rude (in my opinion) comment about someones cultural differences in what they eat, and I reminded the person that we are a world forum, and eat many different foods.

Except for occasional travels off topic, things are running OK for me.

I was wording it to include the members here that own forum sites. We have a bunch of members that are website owners who know this site from the software we share. I plan on having more here to share info and stuff, soon. :)

p.s.  LC  :D

I wouldn't necessarily say that's true.   I've seen members in some forums occasionally throw stinkbombs in people's threads.  I don't know that it happens a lot, but it does happen.

What I thought was a troll in the Biker forum, who would have been verbally slapped into the next zip code had he actually been there to cause shit, turned out to be Frank being a smartass.  Trolls won't make it in my place, for damn sure.  How would we handle them?  We'd lock them out, quick and simple.

This is part of the general rule on my forum:

Flaming/Trolling - Any content that is unlawful, harmful, harassing, threatening, defamatory, vulgar, hateful or distasteful in nature are prohibited. Swearing is prohibited in general areas as we have a wide age range. This site employs a profanity filter. Please use appropriate language. Continued threats against a member, moderator or administrator will NOT be tolerated. If you disagree with another member, respond to the subject, not the person as the Internet has made it easy to make personal attacks, you must still exercise courtesy and self-restraint here. Please use the PM (Private Messaging) system to resolve personal issues.

I don't like the idea of banning people. Just because I don't like what someone has to say, or even the way that person says whatever they have to say, doesn't mean that they don't deserve a voice. Discussion forums would get awfully sterile awfully quickly if all people did was sit around and agree with each other. I mean really...YAWN. So some discussion, dissension, and disagreement are essential to the life and growth of any community.

That said, if I owned such a place (I don't), I would not tolerate personal attacks on anyone. A poster who consistently did such a thing would be warned once and then summarily banned if he or she did not moderate behavior. Smartasses, I can handle. Dumbasses...fugeddaboudit.

That is very similar to a phrase I know: "Attack the idea, not the person" - it's a handy phrase I picked up from somewhere years ago that always stuck with me ...

Well...that kind of depends on your definition of "trolls" Frank.  What do you consider a troll?
