I thought that was odd too.  Not, "God damn white people" or "God damn racists"  just "God damn America.
"God damn racists" I could understand.  (I don't see it as a particularly "Christian" response, but that's neither here nor there...)  I think "God damn white people" would probably be almost as problematic as "God damn America".  Certainly, it would be less offensive and anti-American, but it would still be 180 degrees from the kind of thing a political candidate should come within 100 miles of, if they want to get elected. 

And I agree:  This was an attempt to put out a fire, not an explanation of his views.  From all available evidence, he doesn't agree with the views, but he didn't disagree with them enough to leave the church, and that's where the political problem lies.

The problem with that, however, is that it is looking like he may get the Democratic nomination...

and I'll be DAMNED if I'm going to vote for McCain or any other Republican in this lifetime.

You said it.  Am I being too demanding in asking for a president that does not have some kind of darkness in his past?

Is it possible to become a professional politician without ever compromising values?

I know this may be a small thing, but I have been buffeted by the political winds of scandal for so long, Watergate, airport bathrooms, corruption, Contra weapons, spy outings, etc, that I really, really have a problem with any kind of whiff of moral pollution.

Maybe I'm out of line.:dunno:

I don't think it's possible to become president (or a senator for any length of time) without getting your hands dirty.  The only difference now is that we have a lot more access to the information than in days of yore.

Having said that, there's a difference between someone who compromises their principles and someone who compromises their ethics.  Politics means you have to be "friends" with as many people as possible, but that doesn't mean you have to be a lackey to the highest bidder.

Lets not forget about the American Indians that were killed via settling the old west.  Yes and the Afro-Americans uses as slaves by people of religion.  Yes complete tribes wiped out because they were assumed to be the savages. No one is perfect. We all have skeltons in our closet. We've all made pour decisions.

But we are talking about becoming President of the United States. It is impossible for Obama to explain away a 20 year association with Wright claiming he didn't know his sentiments on the issues being raised. At a minimum he demonstated a passive acceptance of Wright's radical views.

Obama is a smart and articulate individual that tried to portray himself as a moderate on racial issues. I think he was able to win over some white democrats that were borderline on the issue of voting for an African-American. I think the revelations regarding his association with Wright are going to scare some of them away and if it doesn't cost him the Democratic nomination it may cost him the general election.
