i can understand the feelings of people about this, but it's really no more invasive than fingerprinting. we need a DNA database, mainly because of traveling serial killers and rapists. in many courts now people have cheek swab taken upon conviction along with another fingerprinting.

and we in florida anyway, have always taken DNA from convicted sex offenders.

Ok, convicted rapists and such I can understand, but to have to give up your DNA when arrested for a crime????  I think NOT.  WTF happened to innocent until proven guilty?  This says, to me, that you are convicted when you're arrested, not after you've had your day in court, and it's pure bullshit.

i know this will be a volatile issue. but arrested people are printed before conviction. it does not imply guilt. neither will the DNA database.

at any given day in the US there are 30 serial killers operating state to state. and the same goes for rapists. it is much easier to get a righteous conviction when you have DNA. we have one guy who was raping at gunpoint up and down the eastern seaboard in a number of states, a guy nobody would have ever suspected. thanks to DNA we got a conviction.

just as an aside...years ago there was a village in England that suffered the rape and murder of a little girl. they took DNA from every male who lived there. i am sure there was a hue and cry from some about it, but the innocent had no fear. and they got their killer.

edited to add: DNA OFTEN proves innocence as well as guilt.

The innocent had no fear?  There is something wrong with the idea that "if you're not guilty you have nothing to worry about".  Seriously wrong.

As another aside, look into a recent case here in Michigan with a defendant named Hatcher.  He spent 12 YEARS in prison convicted of a rape.  The prosecution played some games and hid DNA results which took 12 years to come out proving that the man was innocent.  So this idea of DNA is a great tool really depends on who has it and what their intentions are.  If it's a prosecutor looking to wrack up his conviction rate, even the innocent get screwed.  All three big counties here; Wayne, Oakland and Macomb all have prosecutors under investigation for malicious prosecution and pulling stunts like this.  Don't tell me justice always wins.  Or even usually.  I've seen more cases than Bullet's where the innocent get well and truly fu*ked.

i do know that barry sheck of the innocence project has managed to get some of the wrongfully-convicted freed. all due to DNA. miscarriages of justice are common, as you know. but in cases where bodily samples are unquestionable, it does help the innocent. it's relatively new, and i have hopes it will prevent wrongful convictions one day.

prosecutorial misconduct of which you speak is a different issue. and punishable as it should be.

i never thought justice always wins. i've seen too many cases to the contrary. i have hopes for the DNA database so that guilt can be established beyond a reasonable doubt.

DNA and Fingerprinting is fine and can really pin the guilty by the short hairs however, I would fight tooth and nail if someone wanted any part of me, unless I was guilty of a crime.  I'm afraid I see the day where if you get stopped for a traffic ticket, you're fingerprinted on the spot, right in your car.  Hell they already tried at the bank, and I closed my account!   DNA should be taken from a convicted rapist, killer, and child molester.  I feel like giving it in any other case, should be voluntarily only.  Actually, they already have DNA of all babies born now I think!  It's just another "tracking" device in this free country of ours.  Like all credit cards, SSN, UA's, Blockbuster and Safeway cards!   Tracking Devices............... In a good police officers defense, I can see where they may be thinking DNA is a god send.  But there are far more of us who aren't in law enforcement to appreciate the invasion of our rights if we're innocent!

Well it started with slavery so ending with slavery seems appropriate.  Nothing beats the system of buying and selling people (slavery) that the Bible condoned and the Church helped fuel for 18 centuries while in bed with tyrants.

I'll take modern DNA over, basically, "beat your slave with a rod if they don't obey you like a good Christian" or "When you sell your daughter on the slave market, do this and that" or "make sure to give your slave off for the Sabbath and don't covet your neighbor's slave" messages that are played down.

I don't think we should be using the Bible as the symbol of freedom or source for help with slavery to be honest.

Let's stay on topic, people.

Personally, I think it's a good thing to collect DNA at the federal level (and remember, that's what we're talking about here:  federal crimes).  Like LC says, police should have the tools necessary to get the bad guys.  Even more important, DNA helps exonerate the innocent.  I would welcome the chance to prove I'm not guilty of a crime, and having your DNA on file somewhere helps get that done.

I do understand that there are cases where prosecutors wrongly sit on DNA evidence, but how is that an argument not to take DNA?  In order to sit on DNA evidence, you have to have it in the first place.  And if you don't have anything to match it to, all the biological evidence in the world is worthless to you.  If you can't match it to anything, you don't have anything to sit on.

Abducted? Don't you mean "rescued?"

What's to understand? They were a community of brainwashed, cultist, child-molesters. I'm amazed they got away with it as long as they did, doing untold damage to those poor children.

Every single adult member of that heinous cult should do time.

Today, it's announced that all persons arrested by any law enforcement agencies, will have to submit to DNA testing.

I agree with LC. What's the big deal? I had to have my fingerprints taken when I became a teacher. DNA is just another form of I.D. Don't want to do it? Don't get arrested.

Is this America or Hitler's Germany??

Pfft. Inflammatory rhetoric.

Recall your president and Vice president before it's too late,

Why spend millions for that? He's out in October.
