her opponent was not a black man, but was instead a "regular white guy" like Edwards or one of the other Dems who has dropped out?? Would a woman have gotten as much of the (let's face it) redneck vote if they'd been able to pick something closer to a good ol' boy? (can you tell what I think?) (Before you go accusing me of racism, let me say that I voted Obama, and I'm talking about WestVa, not me)

There was not a West Virginia at all until the civil war. It seperated from Virginia because it did not want to be part of the confederacy. It was also a big-time waystation on the underground railroad. I don't think it's so easy to peg them as an anti-black politically speaking. Regards, Scott

So you think then that they made their decision based largely on political platform details and not on who the candidate was? Thusly, you're saying that if Hillary and Obama were swapped on their political positions on the issues relative to each other, they'd have gone for Obama instead? (Given that both Hillary and Obama address 90% of the same issues in nearly the same way, as compared to the GOP list of issues and platforms on those issues) I don't recall whether WVA is a state that went to the GOP or the Dems in the last November elections? I don't recall which way W. VA went last time around, but I know it's a swing state. I don't really know for sure whether there was racism involved. I suspect (from what I've been reading) that it was more about values than race. Somehow, Clinton convinced W. Virginia that she was more in touch with them than he was. (I think she can partially thank Reverend Wright for that.) Right now, it looks like a big problem for him, because of all the people that support her that say they won't vote for him in November if he wins. But I think you've got to take that with a few pounds of salt. It's a lot easier to say that when your enemy doesn't have the nomination completely wrapped up. (Ask any Huckabee supporter.) The problem the Dems might have is that if Obama is the nominee, it will be easier to paint him as a liberal (scaring away potential Republican moderates) than it will be to paint McCain as a conservative (scaring away potential Democratic moderates). I really think November's going to be a close call, in the presidential race, unless things really change drastically between now and then. Now the Congress...that's another story. All signs point to Republicans getting absolutely shellacked in Congress in November.

That's an interesting point: The GOP having an easier time painting Obama as a screaming liberal and successfully retaining left-leaning GOP/independent voters to vote McCain than: the Dems successfully painting McCain as "too conservative" and gaining those left-leaning GOP/independent voters for Obama by scaring them out of voting McCain. It really comes down to the fact that McCain really IS not quite a "regular GOP" politician, which you can see by the ultraconservatives shying away from him. Obama however IS pretty much a standard liberal, with the "different Washington" tacked on. Of course, with McCain saying today "I could see us maybe coming home from Iraq sometime after 2013", he's not done much to convince ANYONE but military extremists and the frightened among us to vote for him.

Actually, I think you're misreading that comment. It's actually meant to bring him more to the center than the right. Remember, the comment he's been pilloried for is the "100 years" comment. Having most of the troops home" by 2013 (after stabilizing the country) is meant to counter that image. As such, it will attract more people to him. Either way, I think it's going to be a real battle, but I think you're underestimating McCain's appeal on foreign policy (which is Obama's real weakness).
