The fact that handguns, knives, automobiles, baseball bats, screwdrivers, etc., etc. can be used by irresponsible or deranged individuals in a careless or irrational way should not be the basis for infringing on the rights of responsible and rational individuals.

I think the Supreme Court made the right call here.  They affirmed the right to self-defense, while also acknowledging that the states can limit who is able to own guns, and what kind of guns they can have.  The court specifically stated that their decision "should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms."

That sounds to me like it still gives the states a lot of discretion.

I have no problem with this description of those that should not be allowed to own firearms.

"or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings"

I do take issue with this section since attempts at creating gun free zones have been a failure unless you want to set-up metal detectors to check everyone entering the building AND provide security. Metal detectors and a gun free zone is no help to the 5' tall, 115 lb women who is being accused by a 6'2" 220lb man even if he doesn't have a weapon.

"That sounds to me like it still gives the states a lot of discretion."

I also agree that States should have SOME discretion but not to the point where they ban handgun ownership or limit your right to carry in places where you are ultimately responsible for your personal security.

There's a lot of reasons to have a revolver instead of an auto-pistol for home defense. They have to do with weapon reliability. Semi-auto weapons have a number of things which can go wrong with them mechanically when stuffed in a drawer for months on end without maintenance.

With a revolver as long as the pawl pulls up a new chamber, everything isw hunkey dory.

Of course, there is a lot to say for a high magazine capacity twelve gauge pump to. Load it with #3 or #4 shot instead of buck and you can depend on normal walls to retain the gunfire rather than pass it on to the rest of the neighborhood. It is also much more likely to actually hit the target pointed at.

Regards,

Scott
