I wonder how many thousands of taxpayer dollars have already been spent on this BS.

Yes, your vote is important ---
but COME ON..

The economy SUCKS -- money is tight...

SAVE the $$$ used to prosecute this case and USE it to combat drugs, illegals, etc

I've got to disagree with you here, Sirlamre.

It's not the fact that one guy selling his vote is a big deal.  The problem is, if this is allowed to go on, how many other people will sell their votes this way?  And the issue isn't just with Ebay, either.  Picture entire sites devoted to the idea of selling your vote to the highest bidder.  (Don't laugh.  Sellyourvote.com is already bought and parked.)  The near-anonymity of the Web makes this even more pernicious.  If left unchecked, you could have organized campaigns with deep pockets all lined up to purchase votes online.  Not the bogus kind of "buying votes" with ad dollars, either.  We're talking about the full-fledged Tammany-style vote buying.

It might be a teenage prank, but the idea itself needs to be crushed like a bug.

I agree with Brian too sirlamre.  Those who don't have money, would have no say in the voting system at all.  Um..........actually, it's almost that way now.  ::surp::  Take a look at the media.  Candidates are already buying votes!!  I could see something like "selling your vote" being a nightmare!!  Unless, you sold your vote to make enough money to buy others votes??  ::scratch::  I think it needs to stop here.  Campaigning is already a huge business!!

I'm sort of reminded of what happened in 2000:  If anyone else remembers, there were various websites set up where people "traded" votes:  You'd promise to vote for Nader, and in exchange, someone else would promise to vote for Gore.  There were even sites set up where people were promised sex for their votes.  This kind of thing really has to be squashed, and squashed big.

I'm not suggesting that it's "no problem"

I work in government though, and I know defense lawyers.

By the time this is over, the American taxpayer will have spent at least $100,000 dollars on this.
Not because of waste, but because of the defense lawyera and their ability to suppress evidence from the jury, delay proceedings, etc.

This should have been an instant $1500 fine, no questions asked.
Didn't need THIS kind of major law enforcement involvement, many days of labor by many people, etc.

If Congress would pass a law making it INSTANT fines, NO trial, etc -- then the DA would have to spend far less getting it taken care of.

I don't think an instant fine would work.  Someone who's a lawyer can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you're always entitled to some kind of due process.  Hell, even the prisoners at Guantanamo get something.

Any way you slice it, the lawyers are gonna get involved in this one.  The only way you avoid the lawyers is if you make it so minor a crime that no one would hire a lawyer for it (i.e., the equivalent of littering or parking in a handicapped parking space without tags (which, I might add, should be a capital offense ::gohell::).
